Car wont start

You may want to check the starter unit of this car and make sure its working properly and if possibble try replacing it so we can isolate if that is the problem....

Hope that helps.........

Battery light is on starter and alternator are working

first, what kind of car? second, how do you know the alternator is working?let me tell you how the alternator and the battery light works. the bulb receives ground from the alternator when the alternator either isnt spinning or if the alternator is defective,so when the alternator is spinning and said alternator is in working condition, the alternator sends power to the bulb, and with no ground, the light goes out, so,to answer your question, install a reman or new alternator because your is bad.

I was driving my 1992 geo prizm and stopped at a stop sign and it started making a noise and was shaking then cut off on me. i started it back up and drove off and rushed home.when i ngot home i smelled...

In reading your issue, it seems that your alternator has locked up and may need to be replaced. I would recommend taking the belt off and then trying to spin the alternator pulley as well as all of the other pulley's that the belt runs on (if applicable). If it is the alternator then it is an easy fix and you can pick one up at your local auto parts store. Make sure that you disconnect the battery before you start working on the alternator as the connections will have an electrical current from the battery. I would recommend that you replace that belt as well.

Escape kept needing a jump... got a new battery. Escape started okay for about a week or two but then died again. Weather is REALLY cold. A couple of suggestions from garages were starter or alternator....

This sounds like an alternator problem. Places like O'Reily and Auto Zone can do a charging system test for free and let you know if you should replace the alternator.

Alt plug labled P L F S what do each of these wires go to

found this at http://oljeep.com/gw/alt/edge_Alternator_Theory.html
(and yes, the Cavalier does use the CS130D alternator)

P-Terminal: Provides a 12Vdc square wave as in the CS-130 application. [The Pulse/Phase terminal can provide a 12V square wave to determine alternator speed, used by some Electronic Control Modules or vehicle computers. Connects to the stator. Some ICU’s monitor this signal and adjust engine parameters accordingly.]

F/I-Terminal: It gets a bit tricky here, as some applications do not incorporate a lamp circuit. In vehicle applications of the “no lamp” kind, this terminal is connected to the Ignition Switch, and an internal resistor is used to limit current and voltage. Other regulators use this terminal as an output and refer to this pin as a Field Terminal, as such, it provides an output that is proportional to the field duty cycle of the alternator to an a vehicles ECM. The ECM now has an input to sense alternator loading and engine loading, and can increase/decrease engine speed accordingly. Here is an important consideration, since the regulators on CS-130D type alternators have these two different types of regulators (F-Type or I-Type) they cannot be interchanged. I-Type regulators use the F/I-Terminal as an input and this can simply be an ignition source 12Vdc voltage that the alternator uses; F-Type regulators use the F/I-Terminal as an output (this ion is a signal that is provided to the vehicle computer and the computer uses it to monitor the field intensity of the alternator as an input. If you supply a 12Vdc signal to this input, you may very well ruin the alternators regulator.

L-Terminal: This is the lamp terminal and operates in the same manner as the CS-130 lamp circuit above. It is of interest to note that some applications use the ECM to send the L-Terminal a signal (5Vdc reference), and the F-Terminal responds with a signal sent to the ECM, in this application the ECM and the Regulator form a “closed loop” to control engine loading and alternator output.

S-Terminal: This is the “Sense” terminal and is connected to the battery. It senses the voltage level of the battery and feeds the regulator circuit this reference so that the regulator can adjust the Pulse Width Modulation to control the alternators output. The S-terminal on the CS-130D regulator is the same size as the other three terminals, unlike that of the CS-130.

I have a 93 maxima that needs an altenator.when i went to purchase there was an installation alert issued on altenator for some problem with the charging system. anyone know what this is.

Those are supplied with the alternator because the part number fits more than one application. If it does not appear to involve your application - ignore it. There are a few precautions listed for all alternators - like disconnect the battery. But don't worry about information that does not seem to apply to you.

Need to replace serpentine belt, how do I know what amperage the alternator is?

Most times the output is stamped on the case. If you can't see it, remove the belt and match it with the new one before installing it, or, buy both and return the one you did not use. Generally the most common one is the lower output...higher output ones are used on special applications such as police cars, vehicles with dual batteriesor other vehicles that are equipped with lots of additional electronics not found in "regular" passenger vehicles.

Car alternator to use as a battery charger only

It would be a very complicated way of charging a battery . Apart from having to have a power source to spin the alternaftor around you will also need a voltage control system (regulator) or else you will cook the battery. Unless you really know what you are doing i wouldn't recommend it

Surely it would be cheaper to get a regular battery charger.
