My 96 grande cherokee 6cyl.4wd started out missing/dieing out while driving and would even cut off.cranks bac up after sitting awhile.engine light is on calling for an oxygen sensor,I have only replaced fuel filter and ign.coil. Plugs/wires are ok.pcm has been updated due to recall.it will not crank now, could the fuel pump be at fault? the oxygen sensor couldnt be the only problem right?

Lets see if I understand this...Engine was cutting out, then would not start...now it does not turn (crank) when you turn the key...and you want to know if it's the fuel pump?

The crankshaft position sensor controls spark and if faulty would give the symptons you have described you need to get this checked first

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee keeps cutting off and won't start some times

I would start by going to an auto parts store and having them scan the computer for codes, even if the engine light is not on. i have heard about auto part stores saying they can not scan if light is not on. i am not sure if it is the scan tool they use or what but sometimes there could be a pending code where the computer is waiting to see the problem again before turning light on. if this is the case then ask them to scan it anyway or go to a shop and ask them to do it. the reason for this is that these trucks have crank sensor problems.

the next time is dies check for spark, remove a sparkplug wire and place a screw driver into the boot of the wire and place it near a ground, a metal surface and then have someone crank the engine and see if there is spark. if there is no spark or you got a code of the crank sensor then i would replace the crank sensor, but if you have good spark and truck will not start then try spraying starting fluid into throttle body and see if it starts and dies out if it does then fuel pump problem.

If you have a fuel pressure gauge then hook that up and crank engine and see if you have fuel pressure and how much.

I will say that this does sound like a bad crank sensor, it dies and then wont start for a while ...

I have a 96 jeep grand cherokee with a 4.0 It runs fine but then dies at random and wont start again until it sits for a while. Like i say it dies totally at random. Im thinking a sensor, anyone have

First I suggest scanned the fault codes stored there; turn the ignition key (without start engine) "on/off on/off on" and read odometer codes Pxxxx. Note this codes and send us for other details.

Keep in touch.

You might want to start by replacing the crank sensor first.
