SOURCE: Check Engine light went on cold weather on Mit Galant 2002

There could be a number of reasons why the Check Engine light is on. US vehicles manufactured prior to 1996 feature a diagnostic module in the engine compartment by the main fuse box. Often a label is affixed to the underside of the hood explaining which terminals to access.

Using a simple metal tool (even a paper clip) to connect the two terminals will cause the check engine light to flash in the dash when the key is in the accessory position. By reading the number of flashes one can determine which code was set. Manufacturer’s code guides, available online, will reveal which system(s) tripped the check engine light.

It could be a vacuum leak, dirty fuel injectors, blown head gasket, etc. The longer you drive with the Check Engine light on the more damage you are doing to the vehicle. So if you are a DIY type of a person then you can check the code on the ECU or bring it to a dealer near you.

SOURCE: check engine light is on when the weather is warm,

The answer to your issue involves extracting the codes. These codes are clues, not necessarily the answer.. After you have the codes, you can proceed with those indications.

My 2012 Kia Sedona has a rough idol and wants to stop running at stop signs. The check engine light come on. It is about -30 degrees outside could that be the issue.

emissions tend to freeze up in cold weather.. some folks block the extremely cold air up front with a disposable cardboard sheet.. this allows the motor to run warmer..you may need to do this..some cars have a space betweenthe radiator and the ac condenser to slide a sheet in there..otherwise it goes in front of the grille..

You may have a thermostat that is stuck in the open position not allowing the engine tom warm up fast enough to please the computer. Depending on which engine you have, locate the thermostat housing and replace the thermostat.

You could also be a little low on coolant. Take off the radiator cap when the engine is cold and check the level.

Temp light flashing after starting.outside temp.-17

Extreme cold weather is causing coolant to contract and fluid level is reading low level ... After starting with the engine warm the temp light should go off due to expansion of the coolant ... Solution: Add a small amount of coolant to compensate for cold weather contraction. Good luck!

Runs bad in hot days, good in cold days. 89 benz

It could possibly be your temperature sensor. I had a Buick with the same problem. In winter, it ran fine. When the weather warmed up, the car would sputter and die. A defective temp. sensor will cause your car's ECM to mis-read the coolant's temp. So it will adjust your fuel input as if the outside temp. was -30,causing an over-rich fuel mixture.

"Check engine" light stays on.

How many miles? One thing is with diesel engines the glow plugs do come back on till engine hits a low warm temp when it's cold out. You may see the light come one once or twice after it's first started.

OIL CHANGE

5/30 is the correct oil to use (for maximum engine efficiency, gas mileage. !0/30 won't 'clog up' your motor, but it will make it more difficult to start in the cold weather. Just think of maple syrup in your fridge, try to pour it, compare to pouring @ room temp, The many oil lubricated engine parts will have difficulty turning, spinning, etc if u had cold thick syrup in the engine. Warm up the syrup, everything moves freely. The 10/30 is just a heavier (thicker if u will) oil, not what u should use in the cold weather. If u have your owners manual, check it out, it will give u the recommended oil weight to use for the temperature of your climate, but I think u will find 5/30 recommended for most situations. Always change your filter when u change the oil, change oil and filter 2x a year or 3k miles whichever comes 1st
