Clutch bleeding Hi I have a 1997 Saturn coup sc1 and I have got some clutch hydraulic problem, I replaced the slave and master cylinder, and bleed it by the conversional way by pumping and holding down the pedal loosening the nipple, and the pedal came up just a little, the gears barely change and some grind, it feels like I need more pressure on the pedal, how do I get it where the pedal is a little more stiffer? Loosen the line at the master cylinder to allow the master cylinder to prim properly then bleed out the system. There is still air in the system.

if you loosten the slave bleeder screw and push in the clutch pedal fluid should come out if not make sure someone holds down the pedal and tighten the screw then pump the clutch a few times and hold the pedal and open the screw if no fluid repeat a couple of times if still no fluid you need either a new master cylinder or just rebuild it( normally cheaper) and if you rebuild it make sure you flush all the lines of debris

i think youre doing the right thing. they are very stubborn to bleed because the hyd. line goes up high across back of engine before droppiing back down to slave cyl., trapping air. could try to gravity bleed by opening bleeder at slave, cap off of master cyl, full with fluid then it may start to come out after a bit. then try your process again. or can try to bleed at connections further up the line, working your way back to bleeder. hope this helps. be patient.

If you have had the flywheel cut, have a clutch with a different release height (different finger or diaphram design & height) or a remanufactured pressure plate, or all of the above, you may run into this problem.
Small differences there translate to a large difference at the pedal. On linkage type designs, there were several options including longer/shorter throwout bearing or adjustable fork pivot ball. Hydraulic systems should compensate somewhat, but if you are beyond the travel of the slave cyl, I'm not sure there is anything you can do from the outside. I would check that there are no air leaks. If you have an external slave cylinder you may be able to make a slightly longer rod that connects the slave to the clutch fork. I really can't think of anything else to do at this point.

There would be a bleed nipple on it. It would be located near the bellhousing.
Open nipple a little let fluod seep out until no bubbles in it. Make sure you top the fluid up and dont let it empty.

How do I fill the slave unit of a hydraulic clutch 04 saturn


Fill the master, and bleed the slave, just like you bleed a brake system. Takes two people, and three are better.
Pump clutch. Hold down.
Open bleed valve on slave.
Close bleed valve on slave
add fluid to master.
repeat until no air comes out when you open bleed valve on slave.

Bleeding hydraulic clutches


Did you replace the master or slave cylinder?
If you replaced the clutch master cylinder, make sure you bench bleed it before you install it. Bench bleed it by getting a "bleed kit" (plastic fittings that screw into the hole where the hydraulic line connects to it, and a couple of hoses) secure the master cylinder in a vise (don't crush it, just hold it firmly), insert the plastic fitting and attach a hose. Fill the reservoir with brake fluid, then route the hose back into the fluid within the reservoir. insert a rod into the end of the master cylinder where the brake rod goes, then slowly push in and out until you don't see any more bubbles.
Then remove the plastic fitting and quickly install. Make sure to keep some rags handy to put under the master cylinder as it will leak a little while you're trying to get it installed. Keep in mind that brake fluid can ruin your paint, so wipe any off immediately.

If you replaced the slave cylinder and it's not bleeding, you can connect a long vacuum line to the bleeder valve on the slave cylinder and hold it in the master cylinder fluid reservoir. have someone pump the clutch slowly until all of the bubbles are gone, then bleed it the "old-school" way, by opening and closing the bleed valve while someone pumps for you.

Stiffer clutch


Not sure why you replaced master and slave. might be disc or pressure plate problem. If not, then you still have some air in the system. I suggest using a MitiVac which uses vacuum instead of pumping the pedal. It is an easy tool to operate and only requires 1 person, you squeeze it by hand. Sometimes it can be stubborn air bubble, but you must have full pedal travel to clear the gears when you shift. Hope that helps.

Check the hydraulic clutch operation. This is a clutch master cylinder with a reservoir on the firewall, and a clutch slave cylinder down on the bell housing of the transmission, with a steel tube running from the master to the slave cylinder. When clutch pedal is depressed, hydraulic fluid (brake fluid) is forced from the master to the slave. The slave cylinder should push out a little plunger that contacts the clutch fork lever-pushing it forward to engage the clutch.
Add brake fluid to the reservoir if needed. Watch the plunger on the slave cylinder: if it moves little, or not enough, try bleeding the slave from the bleeder valve. They are bled just like brakes. If bleeding doesn't help, your clutch master or the slave may need replacing. The master cylinder, like a brake master, has internal seals that hold hydraulic pressure, so force can be applied to the plunger on the slave cylinder.

Yes, hydraulic--check again--fender side of brake master. Slave is usual cause of leak that eventually causes master reservoir to go dry and start drawing air. Check slave for leak. If leaking, replace slave and bleed system. Make sure to bench-bleed slave before installation by opening bleeder and pouring fluid into line port.

  1. Raise and support the front end on jackstands.
  2. Back off the flare nut on the fluid pipe to free the slave cylinder hose.
  3. Pull off the hose-to-bracket retaining clip and pull the hose from the bracket. Cap the pipe to prevent fluid loss.
  4. Unbolt and remove the slave cylinder.
  5. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the bolt to 12-17 ft. lbs. (16-23 Nm).

How do you change a clutch cable on 97 saturn sc1?


Impossible as it has a hydraulic clutch, and no it cannot be adjusted. It has a small master cylinder and a slave cylinder, just like a brake system. If one of those has failed, you buy a pre-bled replacement for the whole little system and bolt it in.

one way to bleed it is by pulling the piston like slave cylinder with the rod out of the transmission and by pushing the rod into the slave cylinder several times, make sure you have plenty of dot3 brake fluid in the clutch master slave before you do this. by pushing the rod into the slave cylinder it acts like doing a brake job it bleeds the air out into the clutch master slave cylinder and sucks in the break fluid getting rid of all air in the system. thats the only way to bleed those systems seeing as they are sealed systems

HYDRAULIC SYSTEM BLEEDING The clutch hydraulic assembly has been filled with fluid and bled of air at the factory. Do not attempt to bleed the hydraulic system. While the unit does not require periodic checking, it must be serviced, when necessary, as a complete assembly. The system is full when the reservoir is half full. Only DOT 3 brake fluid should be added to the system. If the fluid level drops, inspect the system, including the slave cylinder, for leakage. A slight wetting of the slave cylinder surface is normal. Fill the clutch master cylinder reservoir with brake fluid. Be careful not to spill brake fluid on the painted surface of the vehicle.

I cant get pressure to my clutch pedal in my 1995 saturn sc2. i changed out the slave cylinder and the clutch. I tried bleeding the slave cylinder, and still no pressure, why?


You cannot bleed these clutch hydraulics. They are meant to be a pre-bled sealed unit that you buy. You should never replace just the slave or the master. Buy them both and replace them as one unit which is already bled from the factory. Otherwise you will experience what you are describing.

Make sure you install the slave cylinder (into the transmission hole) first and then the master cylinder (pedal side) next and do not hook up the pedal until everything is installed.

If you take the slave out with the pedal attached it will extend the rod and ruin the hydraulics rendering them useless.

Bleed the clutch


No way to bleed the clutch system.You need to buy a clutch master/Slave assy from saturn.Comes completely full of fluid & ready to install.It has retainers to hold slave pin in place until fully installed.Once installed you push the pedal & you will hear a faint click which is the slave retainer breakaways relieving.No other way to bleed although aftermarket parts house will sell you individual pieces.hope this helps
