Question about 1994 Toyota Corolla

1 Answer

88 Toyota Corolla backfires through carburetor.

Just bought a 88 Toyota Corolla that had been sitting for about 10 months. I noticed it had a new fuel pump and filter. The car started with a little starter fluid, and idled fine for about 10 mins. Then it died and wouldn't start without more starter fluid. I drove it out of the garage and let it run for about 10 mins more, then it died again. Then when I got it started (with more starter fluid) and gave it gas, it sputtered and backfired through the carb. After letting it sit for a couple hours I was able to get it started, and it ran for about 5 mins then died again. I looked down into the carb, and it is getting fuel. I can't get the engine to run for more than 10 mins! I tried spraying carb cleaner on and in it. No help. All the vac hoses seem to all be connected. I don't think it's a timing problem because when it is running (for about 10 mins) and I give it gas it revs and sounds fine. Only after 10 mins does it start to shake, sputter and die. I'm going crazy trying to solve this problem! Can anyone help?

It sounds like you have a carb and gas tank full of water. You may have to drop the tank, drain it, rinse with methyl hydrate and refill. Throw a quart of methyl hydrate in the tank when you refill it to try and dry the carb out. Oh, new fuel filter as well.

If that is carbureted, and has a mechanical fuel pump, try running a length of fuel line from inlet side of pump to a gas can that has fresh, clean fuel, and if it runs good that way, you know problem is most likely in the tank. Removing the tank & cleaning it out is best solution from there. I'd even be tempted to add a small bottle or 2 of Lucas Fuel Sytem Cleaner to first fill in clean tank, just to help clean lines as well as carb.

Did you try to adjust the choke in the carburetor? Also, check to see if there's a vacuum leak. This may solve the problem.

Sounds like an intake manifold leak. Once the manifold gets hot the gasket leaks. I would check that first and the head gasket second. Are you getting any smoke, hesitation at all?

My vechicle is taking to much fuel its a ae91 model corolla with 5a engine

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

Does your corolla still runs on carburetor? If it is then it's a common problem. The carburetor's jet spits too much fuel when worn out. I strongly suggest that you get a carburetor kit and replace the jet and seals to resolve the problem.

Fuel consumption will surely be good after the procedure.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Where is the toyota corolla 1991 fuel filter located?

Hi,

You could find the fuel filter mounted on the fire wall.

Just follow the fuel line/hose from your carburetor and it will lead to the fuel filter itself.

Hope that hels out!

Thanks for using Fixya!

How do i check fuel pump on 1993 toyota corolla

THis is normally done with a pressure gauge on the fuel rail. Do you suspect a fuel delivery problem? Take off the air filter and spray a little carb cleaner in the intake manifold and crank. If it tries to start you are going in the right direction possibly fuel pump. Use extreme caution not to spreay too much. If the car backfires you may see a backflash flame!

My 1984 toyota corolla ran out of gas now it wont idle

Quick explanation of your fuel system:

An automotive fuel system consists of everything between the fuel tank and the carburetor or fuel injection unit. This includes the tank itself, all the lines, one or more fuel filters, a fuel pump (mechanical, electric, or both), and the carburetor or fuel injection unit.
With the exception of the carburetor or fuel injection unit, the fuel system is quite simple in operation. Fuel is drawn or pumped from the tank through the fuel line by the fuel pump, which forces it through the fuel filter, and from there to the carburetor/injection unit where it is distributed to the cylinders.

So with that info...try first to clean your spark plugs.
Next, replace your fuel filter.
After that, depending on a carburetor/fuel injection, try an additive that cleans the injectors. For the carburetor, try a half of can of what is called "Seafoam". It comes in a metal can available everywhere, including Walmart. It is worth the $6-8 and also will "dry" out your fuel from water. Very good product.

After that, get back to us and let us know how your Toyota is running.

If it starts fine when warm but not when cold it sounds like the choke is not coming on , Get who ever repaired the carb to fix the problem as they have not done what you paid them for.
hope this helps
