There is a fill plug on the side of the transmission that needs to be removed, you can then add fluid to the level of the plug. If your transmission is not leaking and your fluid has not been changed, it's a good idea to do a transmission flush to replace all the old fluid. That needs to be done at a shop with the proper equipment - expect a charge of around $125-$150. http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/CateraOwners/info

SOURCE: where to put in transmission fluid on my 2000 Honda Odyssey

You have a choice! You can use a small funnel and a narrow tube and try to fill through the dipstick tube hole or you can locate the actual fill plug and remove it to gain access to the fill hole. The plug looks like the top of a large bolt and is located on the top of the transmission aft of where the dipstick tube goes in. You will need a long funnel with a narrow opening or a tube to deliver the fluid into the hole.

If the mounts are okay and you are getting a hard slam it could be the TFT (Transmission Fluid Temp sensor in the trans pan) or the Pressure control solenoid in the valve/control body.

Your Catera has a sealed for life transmission so therefore on one of these models there is no dipstick and you cannot check the fluid level yourself. The dealer can check the level but that is only necessary if you have a leak. Use a premium grade oil and a quality filter such as AC/Delco, Wix, Purolator, or Bosch. The correct weight oil is listed in your owner's manual and possibly on the oil fill cap or dipstick.

Got an oil change, now leaking transmission fluid and transmission is slipping

Forget an oil change

If you got the trans fluid changed & it was
filled to the correct level with the correct
fluid & now slips,it was slipping before &
now the new fluid made it worst

If that is the case it has to come out & be rebuilt

They only last about as old as you car is,12 years
is longer than hardly any trans goes, mostly because
most people never change the fluid,at least you tried
to save it.

If it leaks then it either was or the pan wasn't put on
with the correct gasket & now leaks,is low on fluid &
slips

Stop using it until topped off & then fixed correctly

I just got a 1998 cadillac catera and i been trying to figure it out where iwhs the transmision in this car cause i have to put some oil on it. but i can find it. i would like to know exactly where is it.

The transmission in your 1998 Cadillac Catera is a "sealed unit". Under normal use, it does not require service to the transmission filter/fliud.
If you insist on checking/changing the fluid, there is a fill plug at the side of the transmission that will help you determine the fill level of the transmission.
You warm the transmission to operating temp, and remove that plug with the engine running, then on top of the transmission on the driver's side of the vehicle, there is a red plastic cap you remove. Insert a funnel, and slowly add fluid, watching until it begins to dribble out of the check hole under the car. Reinsert the check plug, then cap the transmission again.
Recommended fluid type is Dexron-VI.

If it is an automatic the best thing to use is chrysler automatic trans fluid Most 1998 Ford F150s take Mercon V...also check for leak. The transmission dipstick is located on the passengers side rear. Near the firewall / or back of the engine. The dipstick is color yellow or red. use long funnel.

Dip stick tube?

You might as well stop looking for a transmission fluid dipstick. Your Cadillac, like many newer vehicles, does not have one. Instead, there is a fluid levelinspection port, that in your case, is in the oil pan of the transmission. To correctly check the fluid level requires the engine to be running with the transmission at operating temperature, about a 15 mile drive. In addition, the vehicle has to be level. You can jack the vehicle up evenly on both ends, but a lift is the preferred way. The fluid should be even with the bottom of the threaded openingin the transmission pan when the plug is removed. A quart of tranny fluid with a screw on nozzle will help you add fluid as needed until it slightly flows back out of the threaded plug hole. Recheck the plug for any leaking of tranny fluid once you have completed adding fluid and reinstalled the inspection plug.

When I put car into drive gear takes off real

The Catera is designed to heat the automatic transmission fluid when cold by extending the time the car stays in first gear. This is by design and not a defect.

There is no dipstick to check the transmission fluid on a 1998 Cadillac Catera. It can be checked by opening the fill plug on the side of the transmission.
