1992 pontiac starts, quietly dies and backfires loudly on restart

My 92 pontiac grand am SE 5 speed has been acting up lately. It will start...then quietly die. When i go to restart....it backfires loudly, sounds like it is coming from under the car. It will take several times of trying to start and backfiring before it will start and run. It does it intermittently....and I never know when it is going to die and not start. Please help.

    hi

Sometimes when i give it gas...it backs off and dies instead of revving up.

  • jackie May 20, 2009

I can hear the fuel pump kick on and i have a new fuel filter. It will always start but alot of the time..it backfires and dies. It will do this one day....then once i get it started it runs and starts fine for a couple days...then does the backfiring and dying thing again.

2.3 single cam.....i am pretty sure that is what it is

  • jackie May 20, 2009

Thank you so very much!!! Do I add the fuel injector cleaner to my gas tank? I have been adding gas treatment thinking i was getting bad gas.

  • jackie May 20, 2009

It was STP gas treatment. Improves quality of gas and reduces engine friction. I added this when it started doing the backfire and dying. I had never added anything to the gas until it started doing this. I just put some in my last fill up.....last thursday.

  • jackie May 20, 2009

I really appreciate all the time you have spent helping me. I will stop the stp treatment forever!! Greased lightening for me from now on. But i do have one more question. My tank is almost full and I added that stp stuff to it. Will it be safe to add the greased lightening now? My car has been running ok for afew days now.....so i shouldn't have any problems keeping it running. I drive it to work everyday. So will it be ok to get it tomorrow night and add it? I am anxious to see if it works.....and thanks again for all your help. You are amazing!!

  • jackie May 20, 2009

OK....well that stinks.....LOL But i will take the long route home and afew side trips to burn that crapola out of my tank. how do I get back to you if this doesn't work? Just post a help message again? Anyway.....thank you again for your help. I appreciate it more than you can imagine. Its people like you that make up for all the ugly people in the world today. I will keep you posted...(if i can find ya on here) have a great night!!!!

It sounds like to me you are having problems with your fuel injectors.  In situations like these there are soooooo many different variables and possible problems, but the fact that the car is backfiring makes me believe that you are getting too much fuel in because that is what makes are car backfire.  When fuel makes it to the cat converter or muffler it will burn there and cause the backfire.  My suggestion would be to start the process of elimination with a good fuel injector cleaner.  The only one that recommend is called Greased Lightening and can be purchased at Napa and O'Reilley auto parts.  If you don't have one of these near you I would go with Techron.  Let me know if I can help you with anything else.  Thanks for letting me help you with your problem and I would appreciate an honest rating on the help that I gave you.  Thanks for using FixYa!

When you say gas treatment, what do you mean?  When was the last time you added it?

  • Keith Heavilin
    Keith Heavilin May 20, 2009

Ok, do me a favor and try the Greased Lightening in a full tank of gas.  The problem is that you are going to have to get the vehicle running in order for it to do it's work.  If you can't run it long enough you will have to take it to a mechanic to get the injectors cleaned professionally and that can cost some $$$.  You can try to spray some starter fluid in the throttle body to help you get it started, but once you get it started, you need to drive it for a while, as long as you can really.  Once you've run it for a while with the treatment in the tank it should start to clear up the problem for you.  If it doesn't, please let me know.  Either way, you should stop using the STP treatment forever, and start using the Greased Lightening fuel injector cleaner every 12,000-15,000 miles.  Thanks again for letting me help you and for using FixYa!

Unfortunately you can't put the Greased Lightening in with the STP treatment.  You need to run that tank as low as you can and then start the Greased Lightening on the next tank.  You don't want too may chemicals in the tank at the same time.  You need to take a mid-week trip somewhere so you can run your gas out.  Just kidding.  Do me a favor and let me know how things go with the new treatment because if it doesn't work I want to help you fix it.  I feel like I have a personal interest in this one!  Thanks again!

1992 pontiac grand am still dies, idles badly and backfires

They spark on a quad 4, 4 cylinder engine is distributed through a coil housing taht is mounted to the bottom side of your ylinder head cover. This housing has thin lead that run trough it to distribute the spark to the boots which fit down over the sparkplugs. Close examination of this coil housing will reveal tiny crack in the plastic along with carbon tracking, and these combined can cause misfire and/or no start condition. I do not recommend replacing the coil pack without replacing this coil housing. ( times out of 10 it is the fault of the coil housing anyway.

You might have trouble on your fuel pump motor or on security system (passkey-II)

1.If the car wont start, kindly check the fuel pressure it should be 41-47 PSI
2. Also check the telltail messege of security system it should on for 3-5 seconds only after ignition on.
