Question about 1986 Mercedes-Benz 300

While running engine runs hard. Also tapping or ticking sounds after installed new oil pump ,pan and gasket. I've been told is the lifters. So Ive tried lucas oil stablaizer, Mystery oil and CD2 still ticking.

If you have an adjustable valve train you may need to adjust the rocker arms. Remove the valve covers and look to see if there are adjusting nuts on top of them. If so, get a shop manual and a feeler gague and a couple of wrenches and screwdriver and follow instructions in manual carefully.

Well i have been told i am leaking oil from the front seal and oil pan. second off i was even told that my car sounds like the rod about to go through the crank shaft. it only taps when i run to much .


If the car is run or has been ran to many times or to long with low oil, then the rod problem could very well be true. But rods usually knock at the first start of the engine and then goes away. ( oil pressure builds up). If yours makes the noise after the engine is hot and been running for sometime, I would suspect the lifters tapping. This could be from low oil, from the oil not being changed (low viscosity), Or the engine is just to hot. You will need to listen to the noise the next time it comes up and determine where it is coming from. Top or Bottom. I would try to fix the oil leaks. I would start with the front seal, to see if it is just throwing oil around the oil pan.

I have a ticking noise. Ive changed the oil and replaced the intake and exhaust manifold gaskets. The noise is still there.


It's probably a collapsed lifter. Oil sometimes helps but after time they wear out. And don't pump up to max specs especially when running.

My 2002 Envoy is making a ticking sound that nobody seems to diagnose. ive been told eberything form a lifter to a bad timming chain. Its throwing no codes and runs fine?


will try to help. upper enginr noise can be several things, but i'll try to keep it simple. when was oil last changed and what was weight? ask your self? the lighter the weight in hot weather, the higher the oil pump sends it. don't know how cold it is where you are, but, to assure you get premium top engine lubrication, i do recommend LUCAS OIL TREATMENT BE ADDED TO YOUR NEXT OIL CHANGE, this will take some of your doubt away about top end lubrication. you mat hear LIFTER TAP it very well be a timing chain tapping against the timing chain cover,BUT has it lost power any at all?does it miss or lose power during accelleration?if the timing chain JUMPS TIME it will not start, or if it does, you'll know it for sure. either won't start, or start and you'll have to keep foot on gas with it jumping like crazy! WANT MY RECOMMENDATION? IF IT'S ABOVE FREEZING, RUN 10W30 OIL AND ADD LUCAS OIL TREATMENT W/FRAM OIL FILTER,,,,USE,,CASTROL OIL BELOW FREEZING? USE 5W3O WEIGHT CASTROL OIL WFRAM OIL FILTER AND ADD LUCAS OIL TREATMENT!! THE LIFE OF YOUR MOTOR, DEPENDS ON FRESH OIL AND A GOOD OIL FILTER. I just did a few repairs all at once. I replaced the oil pan gasket, oil filter and oil. I replaced the transmission fluid filter, transmission pan gasket and transmission fluid. I put in new spark...


I would guess one of the valves are sticking or the lifters, but to me it sounds like the oil pump is either clogged or not working. Which would explain the engine light and the tapping sound. I hope this helps Tim

Engine ticking at idle and low speeds


Hi There,
I would try adding a lifter quiet supstance such as nulon lifter quiet, may or may not be available in your country, 
Or try heading to a local auto store and look for a reputable brand name products, ie injector clean/ carby clean /lifter quiet/worn engine treatment.
Below i have listed common problems related to yours that might be worth checking.
Sometimes the oil that you may of put in may not be thick enough hence why youre getting more noise.
it could mean yes that a lifter or shim is loose and needs adjustment,
injector noise from fuel injectors if they get clogged up they tick loudly.
Dirty fuel causing injector noise
Low oil or incorrect oil level as in over full.
Incorrect oil specification/ wrong Viscosity or grade.
Leak or low oil presssure could be a blockage somewhere stopping oil circulating
Worn oil pump not correctly pumping enough oil.
Oil line blockage insufficent oil getting up to the lifters
It coudl even be driveline related as in a C.V. joint coudl be loose/worn and ticking.
Ive even seen cars where wire has been entwined aroudn the driveshaft and taps against the floor/wall
Coudl be a fan if your fan runs off the engine rather then electric ticking against the houseing or it could also be a belt or bearing in one of you accesories ie a bearing in the aircondition clutch tha tmay be loose and is ticking.
However start small and go from the cheapest option up to the dearest.
Make sure you have a good listen while its running with the bonnet up and go through to try and find the source of the sound.
Usually this is what the mechanics would- do anyway untill they find the problem.
Hoipefully this helps so you dont have to take it to the shop.

Ticking noise from engine


You might have a bad hydraulic valve lifter (assuming this engine has them)... you could try an aftermarket product designed to unstick valve lifters.... any auto parts store carries them.

Replaced timing belt, now oil pressure comes and then goes


You may have something in the oil pan clogging the sump screen. When the oil pump turns and picks up oil it feeds through a pick up tube that runs at or near the lowest point in the oil pan. This low point is where trash usually accumulates. Trash meaning pieces of old gaskets maybe from an older repair. When the oil is picked up through the tube it must pass through a screen. As the oil is picked up the debris is also, resulting in a engine that is starving for oil. The lack of oil pressure causes the lifters to go flat and thus the tapping or clicking occurs as a result. You need to correct this situation because the lack of oil pressure will or may damage the engine. Good luck and let me know the final outcome. Possibly clearances "closing" at operating temparature? 20w50? Kinda heavy isn't it?Spun bearing - should make more noise than a "Tap"? I've heard several low and high mileage 2.9 engines "tap" but quits after warm up? That SEEMS to be somewhat common with the2.9 Sorry can't be more specific.
