OK so, I checked under the hood and the serpentine belt had come off. I put it back on and the car is throwing out exhaust. I think there is power steering fluid in the oil? What should I do

  • ummaisha98 May 21, 2009

the power steering fluid smelled & looked like motor oil

  • ummaisha98 May 21, 2009

I got the serpintine belt on and took it to the mechanic. He ran the codes 1537.1538, 304 & the erg valve was stuck.

I had him flush the engine and the idle is a lot better. He told me that flushing the engine could fix the valves from being stuck and the erg valve as well. He cleared the codes.

Ho long before I run the codes again?

Check power steering hoses. for leak it sound like fluid getting on belt causing slipping.causing alternator problems.alternator cant charge if belt slipping.fluid getting on exhaust manifold making it smoke it also can catch fire.so look at power steering pressure hose sound like it rupture causing lost fluid and hard steering.

explain what oil look like.if it look like chocolate milk shake.you blow a head gasket.you have antifreeze in oil not power steering fluid.

  • Jonah Oneal May 21, 2009

tell me everything in detail you said your car was smoking .tell me the color of smoke. tell me how long did you drive with the belt off.because without water pump not working.while belts off you probably blow a head gasket.

Take the car in for a new serpentine belt and tensioner right away before you destroy the engine. The alternator, power steering pump and waterpump are not turning right now because the belt has come off. The battery will die soon because it is not charging, and the engine will overheat and perform it's own little rendition of the china syndrome. When the red warning lights in the dash come on, it generally means; park it unless you're being shot at.

You've blown the headgaskets in the engine, replace the engine, from what you describe, it was driven too hot and id ruined.

Black power steering fluid

Power steering fluid has not been changed in eons, i suggest draining the fluid, refilling with a cheap fresh fluid, then bleed the system by turning the wheels from lock to lock a few times with the cap of the steering fluid master cylinder off, then drain the system again & refill with good quality power steering fluid - it should be pink & smell sweet, - the power steering fluid that is!!

Ford 1993 Taurus steering

Have you checked the power steering fluid level? The reservoir for the fluid will be at the front of the engine, where the belt runs the power steering pump. If it's low or out add a little power steering fluid till full, then start car and slowly turn wheels back and forth from stop to stop-not too ******* the stops (when the steering won't turn further that way...that's what I mean by stops)....Turn wheel one way full travel, then reverse and turn the other way. Check the fluid level again, and add as needed.
If fluid is not low, the belt may be too loose to make the power steering pump work, or you may have a bigger problem that needs professional attewntion.

I am having trouble steering my 2000 Ford Windstar at low speeds. As long as I am not making a sharp turn, its not so bad. Power Steering Pump perhaps??

Quite possibly the power steering pump. have you checked your power steering fluid recently? If it is old and getting burnt it is possible that this could gum up your power steering also..

1999 windstar power steering makes buzzing noise when warming up.

drain all power steering fluid and replace with dextronIII/mercon transmission fluid start the vehicle and turn the wheel back and forth from lock to lock bouncing the wheel against the lock about 5 times on each turn for about 5 minutes
if this doesnt work you are probablygoing to need a new power steering pump

03 Windstar makes a whining noise when idling and turning. Sounds like it is coming from steering column. Power steering fluid level is good.

When you checked the power steering fluid level were there any indications of excessive foaming? There are three things that would cause a whining noise from the power steering. 1- low fluid (you checked that so that is not the culprit), 2- loose steering drive belt (you should not be able to press down on the belt more that about one inch between the steering pump pulley and the crankshaft pulley), 3- power steering pump bearing worn out.
