If it needs tapping it needs replacing or refurbishing. The body of the starter is steel and the solenoid is steel both areas are good. BUT the solenoid has plastic ends where the wiring is attached, DO NOT HIT THAT! If there is no noise from the starter at all, it sounds like the solenoid is sticking. Tapping is only a quick fix, it will get to the stage where that won't work

If the starter is dead on an automatic can it be started?

There is a slight chance that you can get it started, you need another person, one has to be ready to tap the starter while the other turns the key (if it's a small permanent magnet starter very light taps) hold the key in the crank position then tap the starter * make sure to stay clear of moving parts!

Stater will not start

Dont tap starters. They use to have windings on the case inside the starter. They have been replaced with ceramic magnets which will crack if struck with a hammer. Have the system tested before you tap anything as you could have a battery or connection issue. Dont add a starter to the mix

Battery works but engine will not turn over

this might be your starter motor solenoid, locate starter, using something to tap it with, give it a couple of taps, then try starting, if that does not work get a friend to turn the key to start position while tapping the starter at the same time, if it does not work, replace starter..hope this helps

My starter...can I tap it to start?

If you are trying to start the car, and the starter solenoid is hanging up, tapping on it sometimes frees it up enough to engage the starter motor to turn over the engine. This is a two person operation - one to turn the key, the other to tap on the starter/starter solenoid. The problem will only get worse - eventually, the solenoid or starter will fail completely. Best bet is to schedule a time to get it fixed instead of waiting for it to fail completely, likely at a bad time for you.

07 kia ceed wont start

yes very familiar problem.first do you now where your starter,
sit on the engine.try this the starter looks like two round long
cilinders one big and one small on top the big one.you can find the,
starter when you follow the red cable from the batterie.that goes to the starter.there you see the little cilinder ontop the big one.
now take small hammer an tap it one or twice on the small cilinder.
just tap tap.and try to start.the engine will start but when you chut down the engine, you need to tap it again to start.so you need new starter.
this test is to be chore this is the problem.you can by restored ones,
they are cheaper and really good too.

Tuck wont start just clicks

Starter or starter selonoid going bad. Try tapping the starter a few times with something. NOTE: I SAID TAP NOT HAMMER. Also use caution where you tap and with what you tap with, you may damage parts or get shocked if you use metal and touch the terminals. I'd suggest a wood broom handle and tap the body of the starter. GL

Starter will not crank over. Battery is fully charged. Starter was tap on before so it got started.

So you had to tap it to start before, now it wont start even with a tap. ?
The starter was bad, now is worse. (Usually this tap on it solution means the armature is warped. [main shaft] Could ONLY get worse)
You can whack it real good to maybe start it once or twice more, but you do need to replace the starter !

Not starting

Tap on the starter with a small hammer or something. See if it starts then. The brushes in the starter may be sticking. By tapping the starter you dislodge the brushes and it should work. If it doesn't start still after tapping the starter, the starter is bad. But double check the wiring going to the starter. You may just have a bad wire. The wire you're looking for is a small one.

Starter will just click when i turn the ignition

Try tapping on the starter with a hammer not too hard but tap, tap, tap if it starts the starter is bad ,you need to replace the starter.

Make sure the battery is good and cables are cleand no corrosion and tight enough.

If this information is good please give me a fixya!
Thank you, Randy
