Seat ibiza start

I think i need a new starter motor, How do I check could this be as simple as a wiring problem or fuse? The engine will not turn over atv all but will start first time when bump started on a slope

Yes it could be just a wiring, fuse or relay problem. Most common is the starter relay in the fuse box, or a bad ground somewhere. If the relays, wires, grounds are all good, might just be the starer solenoid that is faulty, or the starter motor itself. In both cases nowadays, you will need to remove the starter to test either the solenoid or motor. Also might be a good idea to check if voltage gets the the relay in the fuse box when you turn the key, as contacts in ignition switch can be faulty. Just remove starter relay in fuse block and check the right pins with a voltmeter while a friend turns the key in the ignition. Hope this helps :)

Basic operation of a starter:
Your engine's starter motor is an electrical motor that is used to rotate the engine in order to get it to fire up. This motor draws a large amont of current from the battery (in the order of 70 Amps and up). In order to supply power to the starter a solenoid is used, it acts as a switch between the battery and the starter motor. This solenoid also engages the starter gear with the engine's flywheel and disengages it once the engine is started. Because the circuit for the solenoid also draws a heavy current a further relay is needed to control it.
The diagram below shows the electrical layout of the starting system.
  • i : Battery
  • ii : Starter relay(located in the relay box in the engine compartment)
  • iii : Starter solenoid
  • iv : Starter incorporating solenoid and motor.
  • v : Engine
  • vi : Battery earth cable
  • vii : Engine earth cable
  • viii : Ignition fuse
  • ix : Starter fuse
  • x : Solenoid to starter supply cable
  • xi : Ignition switch
  • xii : Starter motor
When the ignition(xi) is turned it supplies power from the battery through fuse (viii) to the starter relay(ii).
The starter relay activates and supplies power to the starter solenoid(iii) via fuse (ix)
The starter solenoid activates and connects power from the battery to the starter via a short cable(x) between the solenoid and starter motor. This allows the starter motor to turn.

General trouble shooting.
Turn the ignition off.
1/ First you need to check that the fuses are intact.
Keep the ignition off. Place the vehicle in Neutral. Chock the wheels and engage the parking brake.
2/ To prove the starter motor, connect power from the battery positive to the cable (x). This must be done with jumper cables. Touch the jumper cable to the connector on the back of the solenoid where cable (x) connects. Take care not to short circuit the jumper cable to the engine or vehicle body. It can be a tight fit and might not always be possible. If you hear the starter motor spin then it is working along with the engine earth cable. If not, connect the negative lead of the jumper cable between the battery and the starter motor body or any other bare piece of metal on the engine and put the positive lead on cable (x) again. If the starter motor does not spin it needs to come out for repair/replacement. If it spins check both the battery earth cable and engine earth cable and repair where nescasary.
3/ Once the starter motor has been proved move on to the solenoid. Remove the thin wire from the solenoid. Using a small piece of wire, connect battery positive to the connector where you just took off the wire. The solenoid should kick in and the starter motor will turn the engine. If the solenoid does not kick in, remove the starter for repair/replacement of the solenoid. If the solenoid kicks in then replace the starter relay.

If the starting circuit still does not operate the fault will be in the wiring. This needs reasonable expertise and if you dont have a voltmeter handy is not advised.
Bear in mind on automatic transmission vehicles there is an additional switch (Mode switch) wired in between the ignition switch and the starter relay. This switch is on the transmission itself and if faulty will not allow the starter to operate even if steps 1 to 3 were successfull. The same goes for the anti theft/immobiliser system.

My Honda accord (+200 000 miles) starts with no problems in the morning but then if you turn it off after driving for while it wont start and wont crank, any ideas?


If the humming noise is more like a whirring sound, you have a bad starter-motor solonoid or "bendix."

First - open the hood and have one of you listen while the other tries the starter. If the starter motor makes a whirring sound but nothing else happens, it is certainly the "bendix."

The same switch that turns the motor on, also engages an electro-magnet (the bendix) that throws the starter motor gear out and engages the teeth in the motors flywheel thus allowing the electric starter motor to turn the engine over. When the engine starts, it spins the starter motor fast enough that it mechanically throws the starter gear back into the starter even before you release the starter and disengage the magnet.

OK - now that you know what it is, what do you do about it.

While the bendix can sometimes be cleaned and work a while longer, sometimes a really long time longer, it is seldom worth the effort to remove the starter mechanism, take it apart, clean and lubricate (with the proper lubricants) and re-install just to see if that will work.

Usually, the best solution is a new or rebuilt starter. You can get one on Amazon, Autozone, NAPA, etc. and the price will likely vary a lot. You can get one from the dealer as well but it may cost more than the car (some exaggeration). Check prices - they vary a lot, sometimes by as much as 2-3x. I think the original starter motor on your car is a Denso, but there are lots of good aftermarket starters available.

Starters are pretty easy to change. I suggest looking on youtube. Just make absolutely sure you disconnect your battery before starting this.

Changing the starter motor (the bendix is attached and comes with a rebuilt one) takes about 30 minutes or so on that car.

Basically, you disconnect the wires, unbolt the old one, slide it out, slide in the new one, bolt in in, and reconnect the wires. - then reconnect the battery and start the car.

New lock cylinder still won't start it.


I'd have to check wiring circuits to your starter motor. There are usually two hot circuits at the starter, one is battery voltage, hot all the time. The other circuit usually goes hot with key in the crank position. use a test light to check for voltage. Any testing at the starter make sure tranny is in park or neutral and the parking brake is set.

There could be other issues, security system-- neutral or clutch switch depending on your tranny--wiring circuit problem, somewhere? Maybe a starter issue? The engine isn't froze-up, is it?

Suzuki forenza wont even fire or turn over! Headlights and radio work fine just wont start and is new battery!


This procedure usually works:
·Check the battery cable connections:
Make sure the positive cable, makes a good connection at the battery and at the starter. Make sure the negative cable makes a good ground connection at the battery and (preferably) at the engine.

·Check the battery the simple way, like this:
Turn on the headlights, then try to start the car.If the headlights do not dim or go out, then the battery is likely ok.

·Check the starter and solenoid:
If the wiring looks ok, then look at the starter solenoid for a good connection, and proper voltage at the starter(10 volts minimum while cranking).
If the starter spins and no crank, the problem is most likely the Solenoid's bendix gear is stuck.
Have someone hit (not too hard) the starter while you try to start the car. This usually works by dislodging a stuck bendix gear.
·Make a simple test of the alternator:
If you can, somehow get the engine running, measure the voltage at the battery. It should be at least 13.6 volts to properly charge the battery.

Dodge stratus wont start battery works


I sort of had the same problem....
turned out the negative battery terminal clamp was too corroded and all I did was re-strip the wire and buy a new clamp.
could also be a starter.

Engine turns over but won't fire up on seat ibiza 2.0 16v have changed distributor cap and rotor arm as advised by rac, have fitted new starter motor and still no luck. after pulling out spark plug leads...


if oil is sitting on top of your plugs, it wont start. probably have a bad valve cover gasket. blow oil out and dry out the plug wire boots with carb cleaner.
