Sounds like the lockup torque converter has failed. Repair requires trans removal and possible rebuild if converter has contaminated unit. Have a trans shop verify!!

Check under drivers door sill step. There is a spice I believe the wires are red or pink in color. The splice will be wrapped in black hockey tape looking stuff. Peel the the hockey tape stuff off and you will find that this splice is corroded and not making contact anymore. You can repair this splice and your problems will be fixed. Be sure to use some good heat shrink on your repair to prevent from happening again.

I have a 2000 GMC Jimmy. It has an automatic transmission. When I put it in reverse it acts like it's in neutral.

Does the transmission actually go into reverse when selected and the indicator shows neutral or does it not go into reverse and the indicator displays reverse and the tranny is in neutral?

I have all gears but reverse and when in park and neutral and gas pedal is pressed the car moves forward, why?

well could be two things. either your transmission has crapped out on you. or you have a shifter linkage issue. which means when the car is in park its not really in park. try this. move the shifter and see if the car moves in a different gear then what it says it is in . so if it moves in neutral it could be drive and reverse is neutral. if it does not reverse at all. time for a new trany is my guess.

2001 jeep grand cherokee 4 0 Ive lost park park is now reverse reverse is neutral neutral is drive How do i adjust the linkage

It is probably not an adjustment issue. You probably have something broken or loose between the shift lever and the transmission. Look for a bad cable or housing or brackets broken near shifter. If it is floor shifted, it is possible that it has something broken in the shifter.

Automatic not changing gears

check the shifter mechanism for binding up and not moving freely into positions. Not starting in park but in neutral indicates something is out of alignment with the shifter. May just need cleaning and a bit of oil/grease to fix.

Automatic - Does not engage when in Drive or reverse.

I'll answer for A/T auto tranny car, with 4wd.
RPM.

got a dash tachometer?
if yes this is easy.
you step on the throttle (right foot) and advance the RPM
to where.
stuck at 800? rpm
goes to 1500 to 2000 and shakes, (brakes iced up. and frozen)
goes to 3000 rpm or more, (tranny failure) or 4wd in neutral?

Transmission/electrical issue?

You think it is in park but it read reverse because it didn't move With electronic transmissions you have to run the fault codes to find what is happening. Unless it is in park or neutral then nothing concerning the starter will work. If the TCM is faulty then servos/solenoids are not working and there will be no clutch pack or band operation and it will appear in park. Even the torque converter clutch will not be working and you will get nothing in the transmission.

My jeep wrangler 2008 - I shifted to reverse then to parking, when i release the breaks it kept going in reverse. So i turn off the engine. now it wont start the engine, neither the shifter will move

The shifter cable has broken more than likely ,Find the shift shaft on the transmission,,block the wheels and remove the shift cable from the shift shaft, put the gear shift in park, then shift the shift shaft in park, then it will start,Then of course you will have to replace the shift cable.

Truck will not go in park. Truck parks in reverse, reverses in neutral, goes to neutral in drive and drives in 2nd gear. How do I get it back to right configuration.

I'm assuming the shifter is on the column. The linkage would be between the column and the transmission in the engine compartment.
You should be able to disconnect the linkage at the transmission, put the transmission in park, then check the linkage to see if it is bent or stretched with the shifter in park.
