Engine oil moisture

I am looking to buy a 1998 BMW 328i, 130000 miles, but noticed yellow milky oil on the engine oil cap. Is there any known issues with engine block, head, or gaskets?

Known issues or not,It sounds like the head gasket is blown,or it has a cracked head.If it was water it would be thick and light grey in color on the dip stick,But yellow indicates antifreeze leak that has not had time to mix with the oil.

If the oil is milky then there is a major leak of coolant into the block. it could be a cracked head, the gasket or a cracked water jacket. so buying this vehcile would be unwise unless you arew getting it for almost nothing and then sticking about a grand into repairing it

Check the oil before you start it, it should be dark but clean. Inspect oil for metal debris/shavings, that indicates improper engine wear. Also if the oil seems gunky or milky looking, walk away, there is a possibility that there may be engine damage such as a broken head or head gasket. Check the radiator or radiator tank reservoir for milky residue which will also point to a broken head or head gasket, it should be clean orange or green looking water depending on the type of antifreeze used. Last, turn it on and remove the oil fill cap and feel for excessive blow by. If you feel air coming out of the engine when you put your hand over the fill tube/hole, then leave it. There should be very minor blow by, but if it looks like it's ready to inflate a balloon, walk away.

your best bet is to buy a Haynes book on your car from Autozone for $20.00
It will tell you if you have stretch bolts or not in your engine.

Is very light knocking noise from 1997 328i 6v BMW a concern?

hi, you will need to be very carefull if you buy this car, a knocking engine noise on a engine that has covered this sort of milage may not sound bad at the moment but you could be letting yourself in for an exspensive repair in the near future, these engines suffered with the bore liners wearing and the only repair is a new engine block or replacement engine, regards mark.

Losing oil on E46 316i 2003

hate to be the bearer of bad news, but i think your head gasket has failed causing the oil & water to mix in the engine. usually, the water enters the oil causing the milky cream liquid (check the under side of the oil fill cap for this same creamy liquid) and you wind up adding coolant since it gets low.

if the coolant is not getting low, then it may not be anything to worry about. in the colder months, BMWs have been known to display this creamy liquid on the oil cap. it disappears when the weather gets warmer. BMW has a service bulletin on this.

have a compression check done on it to see if this is truely the case. i hope i am wrong. and 1 pint every 2-4 thousand miles is not too bad.

Water in the oil

If you check the oil dipstick and the oil is clean, not milky , then the problem is simple. Condensation under the oil cap is normal on vehicle that are not driven often or do not get up to temperature. If the engine is not used then the moisture in the air collects at the high point of the engine. You can leave the oil cap loose if the vehicle is to be stores for a long period of time,This should help .

1998 f-150 oil issues

that milky substance is just the result of not changing the oil enough, it is water and oil mixed. the water is just condensation that ends up at the highest point, the oil cap. clean it off and it should be fine. make sure that the oil is at the correct level.
