Broken Hood Release

My battery died on my Holden Barina. When I went to open the bonnet, it seems that the latch is broken. Is there any way to get under the hood if the hood release is broken?

Hello There

In short no there isn't, however it's most likely your plastic release lever is broken and not the metal cable, you need to open the cover over the release lever, there will be a cable you can pull using a gripper and it will release the bonnet, you can easily replace the plastic llever and it's reletively cheap.

Hope this helps, please don't forget to rate me.

i actually need the opposite. my handle is fine but the latch is locked under the hood. so you sure there isn't a way? if not what do you suggest i do?

I knew my lever was fine as well. I did take off the plastic lever and removed the cable from it. I then used visegrips and pliers. Hold the wire housing with the grips, but not too tight that you kink it, then pull the wire with the pliers. I had to pull very hard to get the hood to pop. Then I cleaned and greased it and it works fine.

Safety catch on hood wont release and hood wont re latch!

I would check to see if the hood release moves when the inside lever is pulled then pushed, if not the cable and latch mechanism may need lubrication or be broken.

Broken latch cable for bonnet

you don't have many options right now, here is what you can try.

if the cable broke on the dash end, try to removing the release latch from the dash and grab the remaining part of the cable with locking pliers.

if the cable broke at the hood latch end. you will need to pry the latch open in the same direction that the cable release operates.
this might be possible with a long flat screw driver with the grill in place. to accomplish this try finding photos of the latch online to see how the mechanism operates. there will be two levers one with the cable attached the other is the safety. the cable lever needs to be released for the hood to open

Hood wont open

It may be that your hood release cable that runs from the hood release is broken. You'r going to have to try and manually release the hood latch by tripping the release through the grill with something like a long screwdriver. You should be able to identify the latch trigger by following the cable to end.
You might also try having push down on the hood while another person tries to trip the latch if the cable isn't broken, but just stuck.

Under the car:
You will be able to open the hood if you pull off your splash guard and use a long long flat head screwdriver or something like that. You'll see the hood latch in front of the radiator with the cable attached to it at the top near the hood, put it on the drivers side edge of the bottom of the latch and pry to the passenger side, the lever moves from the drivers side to the passengers side, the cable basically pulls the top of it to achieve this. so your doing the same thing on the bottom with the screwdriver.

Release the latch from underneath by the lever that you have to pry towards the passenger side. Then open the hood, and replace the safety release mechanism broken cable.

Try pushing down on the hood while someone else pulls the lever to open the hood. Then lift up and release latch as usual.
