Question about 1989 Cadillac Eldorado

Surge. loss of poert. backfore exhust, intermuttent, iy will also rin like a new csr fro 100 miles at times.

Surging, loss of power. backfiring through exhaust, poor idle, will not make it up a hill, looses poert & hesitats, ALL this is INTERMITTENT! then ill run for 100 mils like a new car.. New plugs, wires, cap rotor, coli, TPS, fuiel filter, catalytic congerter, egr valve. I noticed a funky looking connector to the coil prinary, the plastic retailer just fel out when pushing the new coil connector down...THAT was a pain to relocate from upside-diwn and reconnect, but it still puzzles me.. Expensive additives of all types recently added, high grade fuel, Any ideas, please..

Check map sensor and vacuum hose going to it. Check tps for binding or sticking. Is tps adjusted correctly? What are the codes? This car has an on-board diagnostic center that you can check all of this while sitting in the car. Fuel pressure should be 9 to12 psi. according to service manual and you need to hook it to a gage for that. . Check timing, it is a certain procedure to set timing on this car that involves going to a "set timing mode" on the diagnostic panel and crossing some connectors. You can also set the tps with diagnostic panel readout. Check for water in fuel system. Check egr ports and vacuum supply, to egr valve also egr solonoid.

2000 Suzuki Esteem 1.8L.. I went to start my motor & turned it off right before started. I heard some kind of backfire. Then I started it and it's been idling high, the surging. Please help!!

its the precursor to the J20, (j18 is under-stroked, j20 with many of the same parts. inside)

yes, that is rich raw fuel in the muffler. plus Air.
if there are exhaust cracks and then engine goes rich this can happen( a double failure)
if how ever BACK means, back to the Air cleaner, then that be different reasons, (timing)

SURGE,. you never said.

does engine get hot? 180F or more and holds (y/n)
ever get a full tuneup this decade,
most dont so i tell you, bad spark causes, misfire and raw fuel is wasted to the exhaust and sure can go boom.

surging usually means the ISC can not control idle
so it hunts, (a suzuki software engine on all 90s engines)
PCM errors, inside it. (dangerous too)
a modern car, if idle goes too high the ecu commands the ISC closed
and holds it there solid, (safe way , no hunting allowed now)]
so if this car surges, it's , lean engine.

some think flooding is surging.
and this is usually below 800 rpm,
almost stalls, then corrects, seems like a surge.

next time post rpm range of surge.?????

do not drive a surging engine, do not be like Toyota drivers. (over 800 rpm hot)

surge from 400 -800 rpm is class 1 surge.
surge from 800 to say 2000 RPM is class2, and very dangerous to some folks, (key off, get car fixed, tow it)

The ECU controls idle speeds. (hard coded servo controls)

Would a bad timing chain or timing belt make the engine shake


It could if its bad enough, but it will also display other problems as well. Hard start when hot, pre-ignition loss of power.

Backfiring is almost always a timing issue

Check and be sure that your have all the plug wires on the right plugs

Backfiring hard enough can break a crankshaft

Lack of power and rough idle


Is your "check engine" or "service engine soon" light on? Lacking power is usually an emission system problem, for instance possibly a bad EGR valve or mass air flow senser. O2 sensers are common to fault but normally doesn't cause power loss usually causes alittle rough idle. Could even be a pluged catalic converter to. have the truck plugged into a scanner, that will tell you the trouble codes and fault info.

possible causes of of loss of power:BAD SPARK PLUGS AND OR WIRES AND OR DISTRIBUTOR CAP.

GASOLINE FILTER PLUGGED THUS CAUSING YOUR ENGINE TO HESITATE. "loosing power"

AMONG OTHERS BUT THESE ARE THE MOST COMMON.

maybe the engine is worn......old engines tend to loose pressure and they start eating the oil, and also start smoking real bad.

this one is another casue of power loss too.

EGR Valve


An engine surge is usually caused by a fuel system management or drivetrain failure. The fuel management system utilizes sensors that monitor emission output and engine performance are communicating with the main ECM (Engine Control Module) controlling fuel mixture, timing and emission management systems. While the engine is surging the ECM is "hunting" by adjusting the fuel mixture and timing. These adjustment are made by the ECM in a isolating manner as the ECM tries to satisfy its coordinates.
These coordinates are not satisfied because of a system malfunction.
