Strange thing with this car, the radio sometimes work on AM station, but only get static for FM stations. Any suggestions as to what this problem may be. Strange that it plays AM and not FM.

Are these things that can be easily fixed? Instead of having a new radio installed in the car by the dealer who is going to charge me $600.00 to have done?

Are the things you mentioned about the defective antenna or the coax to the radio, things that can be easily fixed? Or will I need to have a new radio installed in the car by the dealer who is going to charge me $600.00 to have done?

This is not strange at all, the problem is the symptom of a defective antenna or the antenna ground to the chassis sheet metal of the car, also the coax to the radio can be defective.

My radio only works for a short distance then goes staticky, also can't set the time

the operator guide in the glove box , covers time set.
all radios do that.
and if not normal, the antenna is broken or fell off the rear of radio.

if got static switch to FM ,
many AM stations, broadcase to am and fm same content.
so use FM. its static free. (by design) but does fade sooner.
you can in fact hear AM station 12,000 miles away it night
called super stations, 50,000 watt stations. ive done this many time.

did you try another car, in same spot , and same station?
are you in under ground parking?

Thr radio in my 1994 Geo Prizm plays A.M. stations but all FM stations are just static. Is there a seperate antenna for FM ?

Yes Most modern radios have a built in antenna for am. so the one on the outside of your car is the fm. Sound like either the cable to the radio is broken or has become disconnected. You should be able to pull the radio out far enough to see the cable, it's the big black on, and determine whats up.

The radio emitts static on the AM stations when I step on the brake pedal, but does not emitt static when on the FM stations.

This can happen for three reasons:

Do you have tinted windows? The AM radio signal travels further than FM due to being a lower frequency; however, its transmissioncan can easily be interfered. Tinted windows affect the AM signal's transmission to your car and not FM which is at a much faster frequency. Once I tinted my windows, the AM interference went way up when I accelerated and braked. I only listen to my FM channels now due to this annoying interference.

You may have electrical interference in your car causing this as well. Does it happen when rolling down the windows as well?

Third, it could be distance, the AM's transmission tower can be far away and you might be barely in range whereas the FM's transmission tower may be closer.
