I have worked on a few of these trucks and the fan is a very difficult thing to remove. I have found that if you remove the upper part of the fan shroud, you should have enough room to remove the fan and clutch assembly. As for the sound, when the fan is removed, take off your serp belt and spin the idler pulley. Also spin the tensioner pulley and if they do not stop within a few seconds the bearings are dried out and need to be replaced. I have found that if you have the time, you can go to a bearing supply shop and buy bearings at a fraction of the cost of an idler or tensioner. This may be the issue but I would also have a look at the power steering pump.
I would like you to also check if your turbo is fried. Look at both side of your intercooler at the boots that connect the metal tubes to the intercooler. If there is oil residue on the cold side (driver side) then take off the tube that goes into the intake. Look in the tube and intake and if you see traces of oil, then your turbo is cooked. The turbo needs to be rebuilt/replaced and the intercooler has to be steam cleaned. If the unit is not repaired, your intercooler will fill with oil and the engine will start to **** it in. Oil turnes into fuel for diesels when it is in vapour form and the engine can run away and self destruct under certain conditions. It your turbo is fried I know a good but cheap (compared to a new turbo $1300.00) way to fix them.

I forgot that the shroud is 1 piece and that you need to drain and remove the rad so that you can take out the shroud.

you may have a vacuum leak or a restriction in the exhaust system check around under the hood to see if you can narrow down the noise. a restriction in the exhaust causes the excess exhaust to push back threw and make a whooshing noise. hope this helps

Ford Escape goes dead

You started the right way.
It sounds like it needs a tune-up.
Change the sparkplugs - Use Autolite Platinum ($3.87 for two at WalMart; $6 each at AutoZone)

Also, check for faulty sparkplug cables as follows:
1. When it is getting dark outside, set the parking/emergency brake.
2. Open the hood.
3. Start the car and look under hood for "sparks" from the sparkplug cables to the engine (or other metal part).
4. DON'T TOUCH anything under the hood! The cables can shock you (bad!) or the fan can cut you or the Boogeyman may reach out ... (sorry)...
5. Turn off car .. that ends the cable spark test.
6. Replace ALL sparkplug cables if any create a light show under the hood.

Hope this helps!
(It's the plugs)
