Question about 2003 Ford F350 Super Duty DRW SuperCab
2003 ford f350 4x4.6 lt deisel turbo.intermitint metal on metal sound 750 to 1600 rpm.already put in new alternator no change.pulled the rad shrould out.was going to pull clutch fan out to check and to try and see tention pullies.how do you get the fan off?and how do you test the tension pullies?only 60,000klm on this truck.any suggestions,or other ideas?thanks curt
I have worked on a few of these trucks and the fan is a very difficult thing to remove. I have found that if you remove the upper part of the fan shroud, you should have enough room to remove the fan and clutch assembly. As for the sound, when the fan is removed, take off your serp belt and spin the idler pulley. Also spin the tensioner pulley and if they do not stop within a few seconds the bearings are dried out and need to be replaced. I have found that if you have the time, you can go to a bearing supply shop and buy bearings at a fraction of the cost of an idler or tensioner. This may be the issue but I would also have a look at the power steering pump.
I would like you to also check if your turbo is fried. Look at both side of your intercooler at the boots that connect the metal tubes to the intercooler. If there is oil residue on the cold side (driver side) then take off the tube that goes into the intake. Look in the tube and intake and if you see traces of oil, then your turbo is cooked. The turbo needs to be rebuilt/replaced and the intercooler has to be steam cleaned. If the unit is not repaired, your intercooler will fill with oil and the engine will start to **** it in. Oil turnes into fuel for diesels when it is in vapour form and the engine can run away and self destruct under certain conditions. It your turbo is fried I know a good but cheap (compared to a new turbo $1300.00) way to fix them.
