Blowing a fuse when I start the car

When I try to start my 1999 Stratus I will blow a fuse. This isn't happening every time it's started. When you go to start the car it will just click once and then nothing. All lights are on and bright.

Sounds like a bare wire is touching the metal oart of the car, as this doesnt happen all the time it must be sitting just off a metal object check positive leads near battery if any of these are showing wire and are near metal if they touch a fuse will blow

What would cause the ignition fuse to blow out

I had the same problem. It's the ignition cylinder where you put your key in. The switch for the start position is shorting out, in some cases when you move from park to reverse and then through neutral to drive the starter will engage and grind on the flywheel while the engine is running. I would deem this an urgent problem and the repair should be around $60-$120 depending on the shop you go to.

My 1999 Dogde Stratus 2.4 cyl. keeps blowing the fuse that makes the car start. Replacing the fuse is becming costly and is annoying. What might be the reason this is happening?

if you can get to a parts store have them test the amperage drain of the starter while cranking..if its too high.. replace it..after a while the starter brushes get worn to the point where they cover more armature conacts than they should and will draw up to double what is normal for that car.. also if its not mounted right it will drag.. using way more power to work..see what happens and repost findings..otherwise you may need a hevy circiut breaker in place of that aware of any smoking wires and potential fire hazard..

Wiring diagram

usually a recurring blown fuse has to do with excessive resistance on whatever that particular fuse controls.
I had that happen a few times on a car that I bought. the sway bar was bent into the radiatior fan just far enough to put pressure on the fan blades.

i think you have corroded wires around the fuel pump harness creating a short circuit which is probably blowing the fuse.

98 stratus won't start

Check the fuel shutoff valve. to see if it is on. press the reset button to do this. if it stays on. The answer could be pinched wires (a short) from the fuse wiring back towards the shutoff valve. if the valve shuts off try checking for current with a test light. if no current . The valve is bad. it seems like a short or open circuit on the fuel system wiring.
