Question about 2003 Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

Check engine light will not turn off

The check engine light will not turn off. I had it checked and was informed it was the gas cap. The gas cap is tightened and the light still will not turn off.

SOURCE: Check engine light/ dash message "tighten gas cap"

I can't tell you where yours is but I can tell you how to find it. It's a plastic (sometimes metal) cylinder about the size of a normal coffee can. it has a flat vacuum fitting on the top with usually three or four hoses going to it. Normally it is located low against one of the fenders and can usually be seen easier than you can reach it with your hand. on the bottom you will see a cloth filter. If you can find something like that, you have found it.
I would also check the lines and hoses going to the fuel tank. Any leak in the vapor recovery system will show up as a cap leak which is only a part of the system. (just did one on a Pontiac GA with a similar problem)

SOURCE: The "tighten fuel cap" message

It's the gas cap sensor. Or you are getting a vaccuum leak somewhere.

SOURCE: My check engine light came on shortly after

Well in the newer cars you cant have the car running when filling the tank.

Take it to either advance auto or autozone and they will have a scanner. Tell them you dont know what the code is. Watch how they hook it up.

They will let you borrow it, but for what they say are "liability reasons" they wont clear your codes. Just hook it up and use the scanner. Really easy, menu driven device. And it will save you a bundle compared to what the dealer wants I'm sure.

SOURCE: got numerous "tighten gas cap" messages. finally

computer is seeing a large evap leak. most common cause is gas cap left loose this is why it is throwing up that message. since you have already done that we know there is a leak somewhere else. look underr vehicle and should see a black rectangular box close to gas tank this is the evap canister check the lines hooked to this and just do a visual inspection of hoses see if one has come off. may need to have it checked out we have a machine that hooks into system and pressurizes with "smoke" the smoke leaks out of the problem area and helps diagnose .

This may sound like a really simple answer to your problem, but I'd suggest you check the gas cap. A lot of times when your Charade is moving around the gas load will shift in the tank causing pressure changes which register on the electronic sensors as an engine fault. If you tighten up the gas cap, you restore the fuel system's pressure balance and the light shouldn't go on again. Since the early 1990s, auto fuel systems have to be sealed so that the emissions controls work correctly. If the gas cap is not tightly turned down, the system reads it as a fault and the engine light or check engine light goes off. That should solve your problem. One last note, you don't really say whether there are any other problems occurring like bucking or misfiring. Does this occur at any time? If it does, let me know and I'll find the answer to that problem. If you want more information about cars you might look at www.safecar.info where you will find a wide range of information including car repair hints.

Check engine light went on Monday evening when I started my 2004 Hyundai Elantra. I shut it off and tightened the gas cap. That didn't work. It is still on as of Tuesday afternoon.

The information below was complied by me, it explains what causes the check engine light to come on and the process of finding the cause.

When the Check Engine light (or Service Engine Soon) is turned on, the systems computer control unit (called the PCM) has sensed a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system. When this happens you will seldom feel the car engine run any different. There are about 200 possible system faults (the gas cap is just one of them) that turn the Check Engine light on, to know what has developed a problem you must have the system tested, this is called an OBD2 fault code test, Kragen/Oriley and Autozone parts stores (USA only) do this testing for free.

Last year I had to change my gas cap on my car, I did that This year, I was putting gas in my car and forgot to turn off the engine, the next day my check engine light came on. I checked the gas cap,...

Well, a lot depends on what MODEL, YEAR, and ENGINE SIZE your vehicle is. There may be a Technical Service Bulletin that may lead us to a known problem with your vehicle, but we cannot check for this with the information we have.
Evaporative Emissions fault codes must be properly diagnosed. Not all EVAP LEAK codes are caused by loose gas caps. On most vehicles, there are service bay tests that can be performed to eliminate the possibility of a loose or leaking gas cap. However, the proper equipment and techniques must be used. As you have now learned, it does absolutely no good to clear fault codes without properly diagnosing and repairing the condition that caused the code.
