I had the same problem...you have to depress the silver button on the gear shifter as if you are trying to put it into drive from park. It won't let you actually press it in all the way...but just press it in as far as it will let you and if you listen carefully, it makes a little sound near the key fob and it somehow electronically triggers a switch that if you pull on it after you hear that sound and within 1-2 seconds of pressing the gear-shifter button, it releases the key fob.

SOURCE: I have a 1991 VW
I read that, if
neither the passenger or the driver seatbelt work it is a fuse. If not
it is as simple as changing the door switch. If you dont see a visible
door switch it is actually in the door and you should notice a door ajar
light in the dash if the switch isn't working. Try to ask your VW delaer about some recall in this subject.
Keep us updated.

I had the same problem on my Passat Variant 2007.
Randomly Park Brake won't activate and/or deactivate once button PB pressed.
The cockpit computer tells "Park Brake Error" (or something similar).
If this is your problem, the issue is very well known to VW Service centers.
I had solved it by bringing the car to the Service: The told me that they substituted the ParkBrake Button (a differently made one, even if identical on the exterior) and Reprogramming (Updating) the car computer software.

also if u take battery off for 10 mins, hook battery back up again, turn car on, hold in break paddle for 35 seconds, then still holding in break paddle hold in handbrake button for 10 seconds, release all and start car up, press break button a few times, turn car off again take out key, lock and open car then press break button again and now all should b back to normal
