I had the same problem...you have to depress the silver button on the gear shifter as if you are trying to put it into drive from park. It won't let you actually press it in all the way...but just press it in as far as it will let you and if you listen carefully, it makes a little sound near the key fob and it somehow electronically triggers a switch that if you pull on it after you hear that sound and within 1-2 seconds of pressing the gear-shifter button, it releases the key fob.

SOURCE: I have a 1991 VW

I read that, if neither the passenger or the driver seatbelt work it is a fuse. If not it is as simple as changing the door switch. If you dont see a visible door switch it is actually in the door and you should notice a door ajar light in the dash if the switch isn't working. Try to ask your VW delaer about some recall in this subject.

Keep us updated.

SOURCE: I have a passat 2006 fsi. The Parking breaks wont release after pressing the release button

I had the same problem on my Passat Variant 2007.
Randomly Park Brake won't activate and/or deactivate once button PB pressed.
The cockpit computer tells "Park Brake Error" (or something similar).
If this is your problem, the issue is very well known to VW Service centers.
I had solved it by bringing the car to the Service: The told me that they substituted the ParkBrake Button (a differently made one, even if identical on the exterior) and Reprogramming (Updating) the car computer software.

Unless the battery charger is a high power over 12amp hours charge rate you should be looking at 12-18 hrs minimum as the battery is a 78Ah unit for the 2 litre you may get of with 6 hrs but that may give 3-4 start attempts before recharge required

Can't Shift To Neutral with a Dead Battery

I am not sure about the Impala but the SAAB (also made by GM) has a small slot near the shifter where you can insert your key or screw driver (something flat) to release it from park when the car cannot be powered up.

Push the brake pedal, and push again the "P" - parking button, engine idling. The yellow light inside the "P" - parking button will turned off. Now the parking brake is released.
