Change you transmission fluid if it seems like the tranny is slipping. If not that, then maybe your MAP sensor is going bad, Are you getting a check engine light?

What kind of transmission fluid do I have to use

If this jeep is listed correctly, as a 1996 jeep Cherokee country then the correct transmission fluid would be Mercon or Dexron III . this is the correct fluid, Also if you remove the transmission dip stick and wipe it and look at the stick it will say dexron III. good day

My transmission appears to be sluggish. Is there anyway to avoid replacing the transmission. Or are there any local stores in the San Diego area that low cost rebuild kits?

If you trans is slow to kick down, you may just need a cable adjustment. Any trans specalist can help with this. I would give it a go first!

Can not find fuse for my 1996 jeep cherokee country looked at fuse box under hood and kick panel on left hand side inside for my cruise control.

Is it #20 on the fuse box diagram in the manual? If it is it's the big sliver one at the bottom labeled 4.8amps 12volts. My wipers went out, I replaced that one and that fixed it. I'm talkn' bout the fuse box on the driver side next to your foot. If it's not it then good luck!

Hi I have a 96 jeep cherokee country. It will start, I will drive it a distance, can be short or long, then shut it off. When I go to start it again, it won't start. After it sits for a while sometimes...

It sounds like your starter. Sometimes when starters get old the armature and/or field windings swell when they get hot. The reason is rather complex but I can tell you this is the most likely problem and the only fix is to replace the starter.

1996 jeep cherokee country willnot start engine turns no spark

First place I'd look is at the crank position sensor.(it is on the drivers side of the bellhousing in line with the flywheel...harness extends up into the rear of the engine near firewall.) Disconnect it at the harness and using an ohmeter, check between the b&c terminals (this should be marked on the connector. Thaer should be no continuity between the two terminals. If there is, replace it. There are other things to look at but it's most common...I'll stay with this till fixed.

It sounds like your alternator may be going bad, even if you have it tested it may say it is still good but the regulators in those wont show if it is bad

Sounds like the starter is going out. Autozone will check those for free. It's just 2 bolts mounting the thing. It's under the passenger side rear of the engine. Undo battery, those 2 bolts and keep track of which wires go where. Run down to Autozone for a check or a new starter.
