A/C compressor cuts out

I have a 1998 merc sable and the a/c compressor operates intermittantly. It comes on for a short time and then the clutch releases and it blows hot.

is a/c clutch engaging on front of compressor under hood? And does it kick out after 30 minutes?

Could be a/c clutch.

A/C Fan on a 1998 Mercury sable won't come on

It could be low freon and your compressor clutch is not engaging. Have someone turn on the AC while you look at the pulley at the compressor. Low pressure will cause it to "try" to engage or click and then shut down. AC is a "danger" item in self help manuals.

Ac compressor cuts off and on...freon is full...tried replacing ac clutch relay, but did not help.

Three things will make an a/c compr, cut on and off. 1 lower freon, will we know thats not the case. 2 possible low pressure switch, sit on accumulator, starting to go bad, and 3 most's likely high pressure, will need a/c gauges, if very high pressure a/c compr will shut off, could be resticted orfic tube, or condenser fan at radiator not coming on, fan has to be on when a/c is on, or system will have high pressure.
