Does my car need a tune up and oxygen sensors replaced after the catalyic converter is changed?

My engine light has been on for a while so I took my car to the shop that does my work. After checking out my car they tell me my cataylic converter is bad. The problem is I just had it replaced nine months ago. They tell me the reason I am having a problem is because when it was replaced & I didn't have a tune up and all the oxygen sensors replaced. I had a tune up done and one oxygen sensor replaced prior to having the converter changed. Is what they are telling me the truth?

No,Although a tune up should have been done,This would not clog a new convertor,If in fact the new one is clogged,You have a deeper under lying problem and I would recomend you take it some where else for a second opinion, without telling them what the first place said. That way,They test the vehicle completely.

If you tell them what the first place said, they are more likely to agree than to test for something else.

VI would definitely suggest that you get a tune up done!  I don't know for a fact that the oxygen sensor is what caused the catalytic converter to go out again but bad/faulty oxygen sensors can make that happen.  Stinks that you are in this situation but I would cut my losses and get every replaced that needs it so you don't end up hurting anything else.  You do know that a tune up is relatively easy to do yourself and could save you some serious $$$. Good luck.  Thanks for an honest rating!

How many oxygen sensors does a 2000 buick lesabre limited 3.8l have and thier locations

engines have a HO2S (heated) and O2S sensors for each cat converter. HO2S sensors are on the manifold side of the cat and the O2sensor is on the outlet side of the cat. So if your car is a v engine then there will be 2 of each. If it is a 4 cyl or inline 6 it will have 1 of each

My 2006 chevy aveo displaying check engine light. error code is po 420 "catalyst system efficiency is below threshhold". i took it to my local mechanic and he changed the electric coil wiring....

Oh My God. Talk to an honest mechanic! You probably have a bad oxygen sensor. It will cost you about $45 dollars for a new one. You can change it yourself. It is the oxygen sensor that is located just to the rear of the catalytic converter. replace it and have the codes cleared at an auto parts store. If the code comes back, then you may need to replace the oxygen sensor that is on the engine exhaust. An auto parts store can look at the voltage of each oxygen sensor and tell you which one is bad. Each oxygen sensor should be bouncing around on the voltage and should frequently be at around .7 volts. If one of them is at .1 or .2 volts, that is the bad one. Buy that one and replace it. Very simple. DO NOT DO THE $1400 repair. That repair shop is trying to take you. Hope this helps.

Check Engine Light came on. Had a dianogistic check indicating faulty Oxygen Sensor. Exactly where is the sensor located...was told 'upstream or downstream' of catalyic convertor. Accessible from under...

Oxygen sensors are located in your exhaust usually 2 - 1 upstream (in front of cat.converter) 1 downstream (behind cat.converter) and from under the vehicle.

Locating and replacing oxygen sensor

Is the check engine light on with oxygen sensor codes?
If there are no problems with it leave it alone. i have seen factory sensors working good with over 300k miles on them. I recommend using dealer tune parts. at least NGK plugs. I have found misfire problems with aftermarket tune parts on several occasions.

there could be 2 oxygen sensors and they will be in the exhaust manifold or the catalytic converter or the "A" pipe between the manifold and catalytic converter. if you have the correct tools you can do it. sometimes requires special tools and rarely they are seized in the exhaust manifold and damage the manifold than it has to be replaced.

Trac light on no power at acceleration

you might need a new catalyic converter
if not i would suggest that you get your sensor checked
these can be a problem the sensor thinks the wheel is slipping and cuts the torque and power down this could be what is happening
also could because of airflow control with the catalyic converter
