1990 chevy transfer case leaking

I have heard that you can replace the ATF in the transfer case with gear oil and it will stop leaking is this true? Can I just continue to fill with ATF or will it cause more problems?

2003 chevy trailblazer, trans fluid disappears with no sign of leak, does anyone have an idea where it goes?

If you are losing fluid and there is no sign of leaks then it can only be going to one of two places. Into the radiator, due to a faulty transmission cooler, or more likely into the transfer case due to a faulty input seal in the transfer case. To confirm if it is going into the radiator just remove the rad cap and look for ATF floating on the coolant. But ONLY DO THIS WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD!!! You don't want to be sprayed with hot engine coolant. But the safer alternative would be to remove the transfer case fill-plug. If an excessive amount of ATF runs out then the input seal in the transfer case needs replacing.

What type of oil do i need for a 1995 chevy silverado transfer case also if you know what gear oil should i use for the front and rear axles

The transfer case uses two types of oil one is automatic fluid the front part of differential takes gear oil 85/120 wt. both differentials I would use synthetic oil and would run 85/120 however if the rig has been well used you might want to go with a higher weight oil oil so you don't get wheel seal leaks.

How much gear oil does a transfer case hold

1. Park the truck on a level ground.
2. Remove the drain plug on the side of the transfer- case. When the gear-oil starts to flow down from that side drain-plug, the correct amount of gear-oil is reached.
3. Replace the side-drain plug, and torque to 18-foot pounds.

What kind of oil do I put into the transfer case? Is that why the computer keeps saying check 4 wheel drive?

no, DO NOT use gear oil. The transfer case uses the same type of automatic transmission fluid that the transmission uses. Is the display saying "service 4x4 switch"? If so it is common and the 4WD indicator light switch is bad and needs replaced. It's only purpose is to tell the driver info center what 4 wheel drive mode the transfer case is in. This switch will not affect the function of the 4 wheel drive. The correct fluid for the transfer case is +4 automatic transmission fluid.
