Question about 1996 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

ATGears are gone loose

I have a mercedes C220 1996 AUTO. Suddenly the gears are loosen up. Not going into any gear. You can be any position on the gear, you can start the car, take out the key from the ignition. Could you please assist me of how to solve this problem.

When Automatic Transmissions completely fail; It is not a bad thing: all you need do is get the transmission fluid moving again and. doing it's job.
So; all you need do is change the transmission fluid filter.

E280 2005 Gear box issue

On some European cars there is just one shaft from the gear shift leaver that operates the transmission. First make sure all the bushings are good unlike American cars European cars are not forgiving for loose or worn bushings. On the cars with cables there are two cables on for going forward and backward one for going side to side; not the gear position how they move the Mechanisms Make sure the bushings are not loose or worn and check cables for breakage. Make sure to check under the rubber boot usually by removing the center cover between the two seats if the cable or mechanism has broken it usually near the shift inside the car. Usually the pressure for going side to side is equivalent for going back to back there should also be a click feeling as you move the rods in the transmission by moving the stick both sideways and front to back. If it is not the cables or the outside mechanisms it usually is one of keys usually a screw in the detent mechanism in the transmission which means the transmission has to come out. Unfortunately they stopped making that serviceable in the 1970's. A 1950's Chevy for example has that mechanism on the side of the transmission instead of on top.

I had a similar problem in my Lexus and a friends Mercedes. It turned out to be a button on the console that locked the gear. Just turned button to off.
Why not ask your deales Parts counter what part you would need to fix it yourself.. He might tell you.
Sometimes I type the problem on YouTube and discover that others have had the same problem and that they post a video on how to fix it

Automatic transmission problem

Change fluid, check modulator? Very old MB towing any number of things could have happened to that transmission. Could be a vacuum leak.

Hi, I have a Mercedes A170CDi Auto that has gone into limp-mode on the gearbox. I have had a diagnostics check done and it shows a P1841 Current fault code which is a Solenoid Valve Y3/7y2 3 shift fault....

The code is consistent with an electrical short within the shift motor solenoid. These solenoids open and close fluid passageways within the gearbox that cause clutches engage and disengage with the planetary gear system that make up an automatic gear box. Auto boxes are very involved pieces of machinery and best left to experts so I am afraid it needs a trip to the Mercedes dealership or a good auto transmission depot. It could be that the gear box can be easily renovated by fitting a new solenoid in which case an overhaul rather than replacement will be the cheaper option. Since you have the code for the fault I would phone around for repair quotes.

Will go into forward gears, but not reverse

If the reverse gear has gone out, it is time for a rebiuld. The next that will happen, is you will loose probably 2nd gear and then all your gears. These are not difficult transmissions to do and should not be too expensive no matter what they tell you! You can tell them to stop staring at the badge on the trunk and concentrate on the compnent. Look at your vin and what are the first 3 numbers? Chances are it is 126. This is your body designator Great car,, great body style. You can do some research from Mercedes and other local trans shops to get your best price on parts and repairs. Let me know if you need anything.
