SOURCE: SETTING TIMING ON 2000 NORTHSTAR ENGINE

Setting the camshaft timing isnecessary whenever the camshaft drive system has been disturbed, meaning the relationship between any chain and sprocket has been lost.Correct timing exists when the crankshaft and intermediate shaftsprocket timing marks are in alignment and all 4 camshaft drive pinsare perpendicular (90 degrees) to the cylinder head surface.

degrees) to the cylinder head surface. 0900c152800a57af.jpg I hope this helps, if not let me know

SOURCE: TIMING MARKS CAMBELT REPLACEMENT FOR CL-T CHARADE, PLEASE

Hi Cas,

1) timing belt - see the small dot on tooted crank (small) pulley and match this with a notch ^ on engine body. Align the 'F' on overhead camshaft front pulley with lower crank shaft (small pullet). You should also alight the top pulley with a ^ on right side of big pulley when facing engine from front

In case of diesel pump:
2) cam belt - alight the dot mark on small camshaft pulley with notch ^ on tappet cover. Move and hold pump pulley and alight it with dot on this pulley to dot mark on plate to which pump is bolted.

Hi, noticed a post of yours rear cambelt replacement on an a4 1.9 tdi ajm year 2000. Would be very grateful for any instructions. The car is stripped down ready for cambelt removing. Stuck on lining up...

Hi, I have pasted instructions below from autozone.com. The instructions call for the use of special tools. You can improvise with alternate tools, but please make sure your timing is right before closing the cover. Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

1.9L Diesel Engine
Some special tools are required to perform this procedure properly. A flat bar, VW tool 2065A is used to secure the camshaft in position. A pin, VW tool 2064 is used to fix the pump position while the timing belt is removed. The camshaft and pump work against spring pressure and will move out of position when the timing belt is removed. It is not difficult to find substitutes but do not remove the timing belt without these tools.

WARNING Do not turn the engine or camshaft with the timing belt removed. The pistons will contact the valves and cause internal engine damage.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the accessory drive belts, crankshaft pulley and the timing belt cover(s). Remove the camshaft cover and rubber plug at the back end of the camshaft.
  2. Temporarily reinstall the crankshaft pulley bolt and turn the crankshaft to Top Dead Center (TDC) of No. 1 piston. The mark on the camshaft sprocket should be aligned with the mark on the inner timing belt cover or the edge of the cylinder head.
  3. With the engine at TDC, insert the bar into the slot at the back of the camshaft. The bar rests on the cylinder head to will hold the camshaft in position.
  4. Insert the pin into the injection pump drive sprocket to hold the pump in position.
  5. Loosen the locknut on the tensioner pulley and turn the tensioner counterclockwise to relieve the tension on the timing belt. Slide the timing belt from the sprockets.

Fig. Locking the injection pump with the VW tool as shown-Volkswagen 1.9L Diesel engines

To install:
  1. Install the new timing belt and adjust the tension so the belt can be twisted 45 degrees at the halfway point between the camshaft and pump sprockets. Tighten the tensioner nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  2. Remove the holding tools.
  3. Turn the engine 2 full revolutions to return to TDC for the No. 1 cylinder. Recheck belt tension and timing mark alignment, readjust as required.
  4. Install the belt cover and accessory drive belts.
NOTE If the belt is too tight, there will be a growling noise that rises and falls with engine speed.

How do i replace the timming belt on a 1996 vw glof 2.0

if you havn' t done it before best to get an experienced technician to do it. [critical part, can cause major damage if incorrectly fitted]. before removing belt line up timing mark on crankshaft pulley with arrow on timing belt cover. remove inspection plug on top of gearbox bell housing. v cut away on fly wheel should be lined up with notch on g/box housing. timing mark on inside of camshaft pulley must line up with top of cylinder head surface at front of head. if distributor fitted, remove cap . rotor should be pointing to mark on distributor housing. remove old belt, fit new keeping timing marks in same positions. tension cambelt. should be able to turn belt 90 degrees side ways between cam pulley and intermediate pulley if tension is correct. reset ignition timing on completion.

Got audi a4 1996 diesel need to change cambelt but

A diesel uses a different procedure. You'll need a tool to hold the camshaft pulley parallel to the top of the cylinder head. The timing mark to set TDC for piston #1 is located on top of bell housing. The pointer must be aligned on the diamond cut on the flywheel. A VW/Audi setting bar tool #2065A is needed to lock the camshaft in position. Lock the injection pumpin position using the special lock pin (VW/Audi special tool no. 2064). Caution: If the drive belt is broken or has jumped time, do not attempt to lock the sprocket at this time!!! You will also need VW/Audi special tool no. VW210 to measure belt tension between camshaft sproket and injection pump sprocket. So good luck.

Align the timing marks on the camshaft gears to the notches on the camshaft cover, using the intake gear mark for the intake gear and the exhaust gear mark for the exhaust gear.
Align the mark on the crankshaft gear with the
