Question about Saturn SL2

1 Answer

1997 Saturn sedan won't shift into reverse. Have changed valve body, problem better for a few minutes, then came right back. Inside of trans looks good, no clutch smell and when it does get into reverse it is late with hard shift, but it's solidly in reverse, so there's no problem with reverse clutches. Also sometimes late going into second, but sometimes no problem. Dealer tested pressure and said it was inconsistent but passed high pres test- so probably not the pump. It's getting error codes 32, 46, and 49. How do I rule in/out the pump and the fwd/reverse actuator? How do I isolate an electrical issue? Also seems to be more of a problem hot than cold.

There are a few things that it sounds like it could be to me:

  1. Misaligned lockout ring- this is what is supposed to keep you from accidentally going into reverse
  2. Shifter cable is broken
  3. I wouldn't rule out the reverse clutches.  Just because it get's in solidly doesn't mean that it isn't on its way out.
I had the same problem with my 97 Acura and it had progressively got worse.  Turned out to be the lockout ring.  I hope this helps you out.

Barry-this is a known issue with Saturn transmissions, and it is the valve body-there is a little cottage industry for rebuilders (they run around $200) and are fairly easy to replace without removing the trans. Before you go into that, though, check the harness connector on top of the trans, this is also known as a weak point on Sattys-Trans services on these cars is very easy, it has a drain bolt like an engine and a spin-on filter too, and the trans should be serviced every 30,000 miles, use Dextron-Mercon. I had this problem with mine 99 SL2, and have been changing the trans fluid often (3x in the last 6000 miles) and it has fixed mine of the ,delayed reverse'. A side affect of this problem is the 'slam' you get going into reverse, or even forward gears, and that ends up needing to have the input shaft bolt replaced. $2700 for a trans is a joke, you could solve this for MUCH less, a number of different ways.

The trans goes into gear but jerks

You could do a fluid change and change the filter. Sound like the valve body is getting a little loose and the fluid is getting passed the vales to quick and applying the clutches to fast and to hard.if you do a fluid change and it get worse put some STP engine treatment in the transmission and drive it. It is thick and it will tighten up the valve space even when it's hot.

It's possible, especially if the used trans sat unused for a while. When you change the filter, make sure that the trans has fresh, proper fluid.

Why a cadillac won,t go into reverse ,but drives good going forward

Either the linkage needs adjustment, or the reverse gear is gone.

To tell if it is the linkage, look at the letters and see if the shift arrow matches up P,R,N,D,2,1

If the arrow is off and doesn't point at right letter, you should adjust the cable that goes from shifter to tranny. Follow the cable and there will be an aduster on it. Turn to right to tighten and left to loosen.

When shifting automatic trans in reverse theres a hesitation

I think what you were saying is your reverse slams, and only when you give it gas.
You can try to do the reverse slam fix, which is easy to do:
Reverse slam fix

If it doesn't work, your valve body is probably bad, here is how to swap it, in case you are up for the challenge:

i had a 1994 saturn sl2 that did the same thing what you need to do is change the transmission filter and fluid and you should not have this problem any more if you can afford it go get the transmission flushed.

How do you remove the transmision valve body on 2001 saturn

You must remove the Trans pan, the valve body is inside the trans case under the pan, I would not suggest you do this job unless you have a high degree of technical skill, there are check balls and other factors that if not done right will cause the trans to not work properly.
