the fuse you are looking for is lockated under the dash at the drivers side if you remove the small change hilder you will see it it a blue 15 amp on the right hand side of the box hope this helps

According to this charging system isn't working correctly ! This is a computer controlled charging system .
Principles of Operation
The powertrain control module (PCM) controlled charging system determines the optimal voltage setpoint for the charging system and communicates this information to the voltage regulator. This system is unique in that it has 2 unidirectional communication lines between the PCM and the generator/regulator. Both of these communication lines are pulse-width modulated (PWM). The generator communication (GEN COM) line communicates the desired setpoint from the PCM to the voltage regulator. The generator monitor (GEN MON) line communicates the generator load and error conditions to the PCM. The third pin on the voltage regulator, the A circuit pin, is a dedicated battery voltage sense line.
The charging system voltage is controlled by the PCM. The generator charges the battery and at the same time supplies power for all of the electrical loads that are required. The battery is more effectively charged with a higher voltage when the battery is cold and a lower voltage when the battery is warm. The PCM is able to adjust the charging voltage according to the battery temperature by using a signal from the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor. This means the voltage setpoint is calculated by the PCM and communicated to the regulator by a communication link.
The PCM simultaneously controls and monitors the output of the generator. When the current consumption is high or the battery is discharged (the PCM recognizes this and increases the output of the generator to accommodate), the system is also able to increase the idle speed to increase the charge.
To minimize the engine drag when starting the engine, the PCM does not allow the generator to produce any output until the engine has started. The PCM then progressively increases the output of the generator.
The PCM turns the charging system warning indicator off after the engine is started and illuminates it under fault conditions (when the generator is not generating the correct amount of current with the engine running). The charging system warning indicator is also illuminated by the PCM whenever the key is ON with the engine OFF.
This is a System 4 charging system, which uses the GEN MON and GEN COM lines to control and monitor the charging system through the PCM. System 4 charging systems are virtually identical in design and therefore, share the same diagnostics. The circuit numbers and colors may be different, but the functions are the same.

You need to take the vehicle an have a diagnostic scan of the control modules done . With the service staibiltrac on the system is disabled , an any number of thing's can cause system to shut down . With these systems the computer can change engine timing , RPM , valve timing etc.... All the modules on your vehicle share information , communicate on a serial data network .
The communication among control modules is performed through the High speed GMLAN serial data circuits and the Low speed GMLAN serial data circuit. The modules that need real time communication are attached to the High speed GMLAN network. The body control module (BCM) is the gateway between the high and low speed networks. Communication is necessary between the high and low speed serial data modules for the vehicle to start. Refer to Body Control System Description and Operation for more information about the gateway.
Signal supervision is the process of determining whether an expected signal is being received or not. Some messages are sent on a periodic basis and are interpreted as a heartbeat of a device. If such a signal is lost, the signal supervision part of the software will set a no communication DTC (U code) against the missing device. This code is mapped on the Tech 2 screen as a code against the physical device. A lost communication DTC typically is set in modules other than the module with a communication failure.

What are the probable causes of DTC U1000?


DTC U1000 and U1255
Class 2 Communication Malfunction , Do you know what class 2 serial data communication network is ? What module set this code an what kind of scan tool did you use to read this code .
Modules connected to the class 2 serial data circuit monitor for serial data communications during normal vehicle operation. Operating information and commands are exchanged among the modules. When a module receives a message for a critical operating parameter, the module records the ID number of the module which sent the message for State of Health monitoring, Node Alive messages. A critical operating parameter is one which, when not received, requires that the module use a default value for that parameter. When a module does not associate an ID number with at least one critical parameter within about 5.5 seconds of beginning serial data communication, DTC U1000 or U1255 is set. When more than one critical parameter does not have an ID number associated with it, the DTC will only be reported once.
The table below list the modules on the Class 2 Serial Data Circuit that will set a U1000 or U1255 and should be actively communicating the previously described messages on the Class 2 Serial Data Circuit.

When a malfunction such as a open fuse to a module occurs while modules are communicating, a Loss of Communication DTC is set as current. When the modules stop communicating, ignition is turned off, the current Loss Communication DTC is cleared but the history DTC remains. When the modules begin to communicate again, the ignition is turned on, the module with the open fuse will not be learned by the other modules so U1000 or U1255 is set current by the other modules. If the malfunction occurs when the modules are not communicating, only U1000 or U1255 is set.
Test Description
The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. A DTC U1001 - U1254 Lost Communications with with a history status may indicate the cause of U1000 or U1255.

  2. The modules not communicating are the likely cause of U1000 or U1255. The modules that are available on the class 2 serial data circuit are listed in the Circuit Description.

  3. The module which was not communicating due to a poor connection to the class 2 serial data circuit may have set DTC U1001 - U1254 Lost Communications with for those modules that it was monitoring.

  4. The modules which can communicate indicate the module which cannot communicate. You must clear the serial data communication DTCs from these modules to avoid future misdiagnosis.

  5. If all modules are communicating, the module which set U1000 or U1255 may have done so due to some other condition.

  6. The module which set U1000 or U1255 is the likely cause of the malfunction.

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Record the DTCs set in each module. If using a Tech 2, use the Class 2 DTC Check feature to determine which modules have DTCs set.
Did you record any DTCs in the range of U1001-U1254 with a history status?

YES - Go to Step 3

The first place to start is have it checked for codes an to see if a scan tool will communicate with the 4X4 control module !
Diagnostic Starting Point - Transfer Case
Begin the system diagnosis with the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle . The Diagnostic System Check will provide the following information:

What does check dcl mean


DCL is Data Communincations Link... the communication connection between the computers in the instrument cluster and the rest of the car. its usually caused (99% of the time) by a bad connection.

The Data Communications Link (DCL) is a wiring system that allows the sharing of information between the Electronic Engine Control System (EEC-IV) , the Electronic Instrument Cluster (EIC) and external equipment.

The EEC-IV system transmits the following information through the DCL to the EIC:
Engine RPM.
Engine coolant temperature.
EEC-IV malfunction indication.
Fuel used.

The DCL system transmits Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) information to the EIC. The EIC uses MIL information to generate a CHECK ENGINE warning in the event of an engine sensor failure.

The EIC will display the message "CHECK DCL" on its Message Center Display if it is not receiving data from the EEC-IV. This warning is turned off whenever data communication is restored.

The EEC-IV monitors the Data Communication Link for faults. If a fault occurs in data communication a continuous Memory Code is set in the EEC-IV. The DCL Codes (529 for EEC-IV and 533 for EIC) can occur separately or together. These codes are not immediately cleared when data communication is restored.

The existance of a DCL code does NOT mean that a module has failed. also I would check for an oil leak or coolant leak that would be the cause of the smoking under the car.

U1064 - Loss of Communications with DIM (Dash Integration Module)
Here is some TSB

Refer to Data Link Connector (DLC) Schematics

Circuit Description
The class 2 serial data line communicates information between modules. Each module connected to the serial data line is assigned a recognition code, or address. This code is used in order to identify which modules are communicating. Modules communicate with each other by periodically sending state of health (SOH) messages. When the ignition switch is in RUN, each module communicating on the serial data line sends a SOH message every 2 seconds. This ensures that the system is operating properly. When the dash integration module (DIM) stops communicating on the class 2 serial data line, the SOH that is normally sent on the serial data line every 2 seconds disappears. The module, which expects to receive that message, detects the absence of the message. The module in turn sets DTC U1064 associated with the loss of SOH of the DIM.

Conditions for Setting the DTC
The module does not receive a state of health (SOH) message back from the DIM. The module retries the request 3 times, and then sets DTC U1064.

This DTC only sets if U1300 or U1301 is not current.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
DTC U1064 is stored in the module.

The module uses the default values for the initialization data. This DTC does not cause driver warning message to appear.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC
This DTC clears (status changes from current to history) under any of the following conditions:
The module detects a state of health message from the DIM.
At each ignition cycle.
A history DTC clears after 50 consecutive ignition cycles if the conditions for setting the DTC are no longer present.
Current and history DTCs may be cleared using a scan tool.

Diagnostic Aids
DTC U1064 does not normally represent a failure within the module.
When loss of class 2 serial data communication DTCs (DTCs with the letter U as the prefix) are stored as history DTCs, know all possible serial data DTCs set in each module before diagnosing the serial data line.

If U1064 is stored in the module memory, inspect for the same DTC stored in other modules capable of storing this DTC.
If the DTC is a history DTC, the problem may be intermittent.

Test Description: The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table:

U1064 is the result of loss of communication with the dash integration module (DIM). Note that other modules on the class 2 serial data line may also set U1064 if the DIM is not communicating with the serial data line.

U1096 - Loss of Communications with IPC

The computers on the Chevy require a certain voltage to operate and if the voltage drops below a preset limit then it will tripper a loss of communication with the other modules, this drop in voltage happens when the car is started and the draw on the starter uses a large amount of amperage. I suggest to check power/ground in the instrument cluster and if good do a resistance test on Data wire.

If your car is not experincing any messages like "service vehicle soon" and no warning lights are illuminating then disregard these codes.
