Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Open Question

Have a 1996 jeep grand cherokee. Went out after work one day to start and and had no dash lights, radio, or engine turning over. Jimmied with the key for a bit and had no success. Checked all the fuses and what not, and even took to a mechanic who said I had power everywhere until reaching the PCM/ECU. Where i had no juice coming out. So i bought a remanned one put it in but still no gauges/engine turn over/radio or even starter clicking as if attempting to start. I have door locks and lights and what not. The mechanic sound he went out after and poured one night and was looking at the fuse box on front passenger side and noticed moisture so he played with it a bit and managed to bet the dash gauges to come back on. Has anyone had a problem like this?

SOURCE: 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee no start

I just fixed the problem with the 96.

Crank no start
No fuel pressure
No spark
No volt gauge and no fuel gauge
No scanner obd working when hooked up says error no communication. With the help of this awesome guy randy from washington, i did some relay jumping, more wire tracing and found it was the crank sensor was shorting out with just the key on. with key on, locate the crank sensor behind the valve cover, unplug it and see if everything comes back on, this is what it did for me. Thanks again randy for the help and this gentleman can be reached @ http://www.aceautomotive1.com.

Do you have an alarm on this? If you do, that is most likely the problem. There seems to be a problem with the alarms. You may want to have a new key made just in case. Sometimes the keys are magnetically charged and after time, it wears off.

SOURCE: 1996 jeep grand cherokee- while driving all gauges

I would start by scanning the engine control module and the body control module and the antilock brake control module and the transmission control module and the airbag module to see if there are any fault codes that indicate a loss of power to the modules. It may tell me which circuit malfunctioned. If that does not give me a clue, I would then start to diagnose the window circuits by first checking for power at the master switch and move to the rest of the power window system from there.

As for fuses or where to start...I think you should probably read these articles before doing anything:

If by chance your check engine light does not light up on your dash, when you turn your ignition on, then your ecu is in need of repair.

1996 jeep grand cherokee 5.2L v8 is cranking but wont start doesnt look like its getting a spark

Might be your jeep's ecu is bad. Does the check engine light come on your dash, when you turn the ignition key to on, before cranking? If not, the ecu is bad. If the check engine light does come on, it may be the crank sensor is bad on your jeep.

1996 Jeep 4.0 GC, will not start. Engine will crank, will not fire, no dash check lights.

Sounds like your ECM is bad, if you have no check engine light on your dash when trying to start. Have it checked.

Dash lights are out

You have all the fuse locations. I have seen some that after radio was put in did that. usually it turns out that re-grounding the dash or using different power supplies for the radio has corrected it. otherwise, I'd check the light switch and make sure it's OK.

Dash and shifter lights in 1996 jeep cherokee wont light

Hello and welcome to FixYa . Locate the dial that controls the brightness of the dashboardlights. If the control is not immediately evident. Make sure the brightness control is turned on. If it is and the lights aren't working, the problem may be a bad fuse. Check the fuse that controls the dashboard lights Replace the fuse if necessary. If just one part of the instrument panel is not lighting up, then you have either a burned-out bulb or a wiring problem.
