You need to do a check at the battery terminals and make sure they are clean and no corrosion and tight and at the starter motor, then with a test lighe make sure that you have a feed at the trigger wire on the starter motor if you have then disconect the main live from the battery and conect the main cable going to the starter motor to the main sable on the solonoid mounted on the starter motor half inch af once this is done then, MAKE SURE ITE CAR IS IN NUETERAL IGNITION OFF and then put the pos cable to the pos terminal of the battery and if it turns over then its the solonoid thats at falt

SOURCE: replacing ignition switch in 2001 chevy silverado

Not the igniton switch, its the ingition cylinder and or the housing. The switch is not part of what you are really turning. It's connected to it via gears. The common problem is the key gets worn out and the tumblers wear also. Eventualy they do not line up right and will not make the "bar" drop in the cylinder to allow it to turn from the off positon. If you have the title in your name and the key has never been rekeyed or the code has been changed you can go down to a dealership with all of the info for the truck and they can cut you a key from the vin number. You can try that first before you put a cylinder and housing in it.

SOURCE: wont start

If the solenoid makes a clicking sound it isn't the ignition switch. Depends on the clicking sound, one click or rattling. Try turning on lights and trying to start, if lights go out when attempting to start, voltage problem(usually battery or bad connections).

SOURCE: I REPLACED THE STEERING COLUMN

If you do not have a pass key any more, then you will need to dissable the antitheft (pass key module) in order for the engine to turn over. From what I gather you have replaced the column with an older version, which will not allow any comm. with the module. The pass key module enables the starter circuit. See diagram.

On my 1976 Chevy C20 pickup I go to start it and starter won't stop running I bench tested and it works fine so what could be the problem

If the starter and solenoid is good and not hanging up I would check the Ignition switch to make sure it is releasing back after turning it to the start position. Be sure key is not sticking.

1999 silverado wont start getting fuel no spark from coil packs

I would start at the ignition switch located about halfway down the column. Make sure that is functioning first.

Replaced starter and key switch 96 windstar won't start have power to starter

A metal activator rod generally moves back and forth along the steering column from the key lock to the ignition switch (generally mounted on the steering column. If the rod had been dislodged or the ignition switch had shifted position during your pervious efforts, turning the key will not allow the voltage to get to the starter.

Be prepare to be very uncomfortable twisted around under the dash and steering column. :(

Take off key but start is not turn off

ignition starter switch located on steering column, similar to picture, you must lower the steering column to access:

not your vehicle, but very similar. here is what your looking for:

The ignition switch is usually mounted to the steering column and is operated by a linkage rod.
NOTEOn column-mounted ignition switches, don't confuse the switch with the lock cylinder and keys. The ignition switch is not normally visible.
On some vehicles, the steering column support has to be removed and the column lowered to find the ignition switch. On others, the switch is accessible under the dash.

The ignition switch is operated by the key switch..To replace the switch:
  • Remove the ignition switch wiring harness.
  • Unbolt it from its position.
  • Bolt the new switch into position.
  • Attach the witing harness

Ignition switch remove

The switch is a rectangle box mounted on the bottom of the steering column.
There is a rod that travels up the column to the key lock.

The car will turn over but won`t start but if I turn the key on and jump the starter it starts

Sounds like the ignition switch has gone kaput. The ignition switch come in two pieces, an electrical switch and a mechanical switch.

The switch electrical portion can be replaced separatly from the mechanical portion (tumbler that the key engages). It is not a real difficult repair but requires some mechanical knowlege of how the column is assembled.

This can be verified with electrical test equipment prior to buying a new electrical switch.

98 chev blazer wont start or make any noises...

Listen for a click from under the steering column when you turn the key on. If you hear no electrical click then your ignition switch could be bad. If you hear an electrical click the you starter soleniod is bad.

I have a 1999 Silverado that doesn't want to start. It turns over good, but I may have to turn the switch off and on 5 or 6 times before it will start. Once it starts, then it will pretty much start 1st...

It sounds like you have a bad ignition switch. Its located on the steering column under the dash. You may have to drop the column down to gain access.
