I had this same problem with my silverado, it ended up being the fule injectors where dirty. I took them out and cleaned them. It is a project so if your not up to then you can take your injectors and have it done for $30-40.

HI, i recommend inspecting the following--

Inspect the hose at the PCV valve. this hose could be clogged or it may have collapsed.

Inspect the PCV valve as well. it may be plugged or damaged.

Inspect all fuel injectors and there operational value. this may be the issue. Your injection system may be faulty or the timing could be off. inspect thoroughly.

Inspect the plugs and wires. you may have fouled, damaged or, broken spark plugs. check each individual plug and wire for damage.

Inspect the Throttle position sensor. this sensor may be malfunctioning.

Inspect or replace the fuel pump. this is another known cause of surging and hesitation.

Please take the time to inspect all area thoroughly.

OK, the back firing during shifts will confirm timing issues. the timing chain may be stretched and it could have jumped a sprocket, causing a shift in the valve timing.

  • Anonymous May 21, 2009

Now that you have mentioned the mileage on this truck, it make perfect since to be a timing chain issue. im sure its stretched and may have jumped timing. this can throw off the valves big time, causing this backfire.

I doubt if its a O2. you would get a code for that.

98 5.7 that "studders" under accelerating. new filter, new cap and rotor, 100,000 done 15,000 ago. Seemed to run fine after injector cleaner, but that lasted about 5 tanks of gas. Problem returned even...

Look inside the throttle body with a flashlight. If the intake manifold looks wet or is cleaned off inside, then the SFI fuel injectors are leaking. This will cause poor performance and poor fuel economy. If this is the problem, have the injectors replaced with an upgraded MFI assembly.
Also you did'nt mention spark plugs, check/replace if you have not already.

I have a 1996 Plym. Grand Voyager, hesitation & stalling.

If it works well at speed and acts up when slowing or stopped it doesn't sound like fuel filter or pump. You can try running injector cleaner through the engine to clean the carborator injectors or fuel injectors if you have those. Look at replacing the plugs and wires on the motor.

1999 Silverado 5.3L hesitation ?

Filling it up with 92 octane will not help you so save your money to get other cool **** . If you want to put higher grade gas to the 89 ,but 87 will do the trick. Have you checked your pcv valve and hoses you might have a vaccum leak.
