Seems like more of a sticking problem to me.Cold start, takes several seconds to engage D but once engaged, there is no slippage and everything works normally. When warm, engages immediately.

SOURCE: 1997 chevy cavalier Z24 2.4l autotrans. fluid level

Hi losflip,
There is a plug located where the right side axle shaft enters the transmission it is above the pan. To check the fluid level of the transmission the engine must be at operating temp and the vehicle must be level. The must be running and the transmission in park, the plug is then removed and if transmission fluid starts dripping/leaking out it is full. If not transmission fluid should be added till fluid starts leaking from the plug hole, then just reinsert the plug and tighten. Generally this is done with the vehicle on a lift in order to access the plug, you might be able to do this if you have enough room to access the plug remember the vehicle must be level.

SOURCE: transmission delayed engagement at cold start

Depending on how Cold it is where you are, The cold will effect the Operation of the Tranny. I am pretty sure that your Tranny is Fine, Just Really Cold. Depending also on where you live, I use Valvoline Quick Change to service my Vehicles when I am on the Road. Have never had a Problem with them. On the Fluid, They make so many Different Kinds now adays that it is hard to Choose. Look in the Back of your Owners Manual and Use what is Suggested in there.

Check for vacuum leaks. Spray some carb cleaner or WD40 around the intake manifold, trottle body and any vacuum lines. Check for loose connections on engine wiring harness (Maybe you disconnected a sensor, and forgot to re-attach it?).

run fault codes and look for TCM module and or wiring insulation deteriation . Additives such as what you have added are not a good idea as they mask real problems and do not do much to help the transmission work better. I would have the system flushed out with an oil change and then have a pressure test done to determine exactly where the problem is . What to describe is a valve body problem from a build up on the parts not allowing smooth operation of the valves.

Drive on 1998 mercedes e240 will not engage after 3 - 5 minutes idle

sounds like the fluid level is low or filter needs to be change, either of them will cause the transmission to slip, as the fluid warms up it expands and becomes less dense witch is why you notice it more when cold, but will continue to get worse and eventually ruin the trans.

1989 ford probe automatic suddenly refuses to engage into reverse.

First thing I would suggest is, you check the transmission fluid level in your car. If your fluid level is adequate, then you may need to have your transmission bands adjusted or gears and/or clutches within your transmission replaced.

After reading your question again, I am unsure if you shifter will not engage reverse or the transmission will not go into reverse. Nevertheless, if the transmission will not go into reverse, even after the car warms up, then your transmission may require a serious overhaul. Try driving your vehicle for several miles and see if it goes into reverse after warming up.

When the car is cold the trans slips reall bad it wont move but if i let the car warm up for ten or fifteen it moves just fine any ideas its a 96 z24 cavalier

There could be a number of different problems here, the first thing I would check or get checked is the transmission oil levels, most auto-matic trans have a bilt in safety, when the oil is low it will not engage or drive..

Probalby not, seeing that's what's telling your over heating. it wont be a bad idea to remove it (be carefull of hot fluid) and clean it off and put it back in. (wouldn't hurt anyways) but this problem is most likly a falty relay form the PCM to the fans. wireing might be corroed and need to be cleaned. check the fans for power and gorund with an omh meter.

replace all vac lines first , then you need to get someone to run fuel pump pressure test to be sure you are getting proper fuel pressure , then take o propane torch ( not lit of course and go around all vac lines and intake with motor running and see if motor speeds up when you are holding it next to any suspected vac leak the tranny in this mod shifts off electric solenoids check to be sure all battery connections are clean and that i wire that ground the motor off the battery is in good condition and clean and tight , however the main care should be to vacuum and fuel pressure
