Question about 1997 Chevrolet Blazer

1 Answer

The ABS/proportioning valve is not working.

The proportioning valve will not pressurize the rear brakes. I've replaced the master cyl. (twice). A garage spent over an hour and could not free up the proportioning valve. The ABS sucked when it did. I want to put a seperate proportioning valve on and bypass the original ABS/proportioning valve system.
Can I do this and where can I find the parts?
I am retired and was a mechanic.

What could be the problem when I aply brakes pedal gets real hard where car wont stop when braking coming to a stop brk. light and abs lights on

Hey Joes, 1 problem at a time ,if brake light is coming on that is in the proportion valve ,did you have to push reset button to make light go out,? if the ABS lite is coming on what you can do to check and see if that is the problem is unplug it and try brakes ,it will deactivate ABS and give you normal braking and ABS light will be on ,see if symptyms change , also did you reset ABS sensors to the tone wheel when you replaced rotors ? I don't know what you have and I have seen some cars need a importaint reset procedure for abs to work properly. good luck I hope I gave you some good things to look at that help you.

94chevy 1500 can't get the rear brakes bled

I had a experience with a car that REFUSED to let all air out its lines, and a friend of mine bought 4 vise grips, and gently grabbed the three hoses (from each wheel) that where not beeing bleed.
first he grabbed all four wheels, and notices a slight mush on the pedal and said that the master cyl was not properly bleed, he bleeded the cyl in a bench, then assembled the cyl and now the pedal was very stiff, then procedded to remove rear-right hose, and the pedal almost went to the floor, THERE WAS THE BUBBLE!, and bleeded acordingly, then reatached the vise grip on the OK line, and released the one on the rear-left, slight mush and bleeded, and so on. each time he tested for possibly air bubbles in each sector (master cyl, or lines, or caliper or aux cyl itself).
BUT!, IF your master cyl is NOT pumping fluid to the rear, probably the proportioning valve is broken (if yours has ABS, might the abs valves are dirty, and thus NOT closing and letting pressure go other way, because a failed abs pump SHOULD behave transparently, I mean , not interfering with the braking operation)
get quality FLARE WRENCHES, because the air bubble MIGHT not be right in the bleed bolt in the caliper/aux cyl.

Replaced rusted brake lines but did not replace valve in rear lines will this cause brake fade in 1995 bonneville

BY brake fade away I take it that you mean the pedal goes to the floor after you taken your foot off the brakes. . The valve you left out is a compensator valve that proportions the pressure between front and back to stop rear brake lock up and side skidding. I think the problem is in the master cyl in that the nonreturn valve under the second piston is not working and hold residiual pressure in the rear lines (Assuming they are drum brakes). If not you will need to bleed the m/cyl by cracking the lines at it one ata time and emptying the cylinder of trapped air allowing a full charge of fluid every time you pump the brakes.

IM WORKING ON A 88 OLDS 98 I REPLACED THE MASTER CYL. TWICE BOTH HOSES PADS ADJUSTED THE REAR BRAKES AND BLED 2 QTS. OF FLUID THROUGH IT AND STILL I HAVE A CRAPPY PEDAL IT FEELS LIKE THERE IS NO PRESSURE...

Have you changed the brake hoses on the front going to the brake caliper? If not, this could be the problem, also, when bleeding, only pump the pedal one time upon releasing the bleeder screw,do not pump the pedal, start at the master cylinder, then the right rear, and the left rear, and the right front and left front in that order, adjust the rear brakes to where the brakes are dragging pretty good, but are not locking up,

Very little (almost nonexistent) rear brakes. Cannot stop rear wheels even with wheels off the ground. Replaced MC, wheel cyl.,Rubber hose, booster, proportioning valve, bypassed rear ABS, shoes, drums,...

What happens when you try to bleed the rear brakes? If nothing comes out, trace each line back toward the proportioning valve--something would be blocking flow of fluid. Disconnect each line at the forward end and see if fluid comes out of the valve openings. You will need a scan tool to complete the bleeding process with ABS. Suggest buying a Chilton's manual for this truck because of the complexity of the ABS system.

Where can I find a brake proportioning valve for my 97 S-10?

When people tell me they hate there ABS, alot of people who pull trailer do. I tell them just to pull the fuse this will stop them completely. Yeah theres a light ont he dash but that can alos be delt with by removing the bulb for it. But int he long run just pulling the fuse is quick and Free.
