Make sure the axle was installed correctly. If you didn't push the axle all the way in it's possible that it's not engaging properly in the splines causing your noise. Am I correct in assuming noise wasn't there before and started after replacing the axle? If yes I would start there. Make sure both inboard and outboard joints are all the way into the transaxle and the hub. Also make sure you torque the nut.

I'm trying to replace the outside passenger cv boot and cannot remove the drive axle, wtf? Doorman makes a quick boot that looks like a p.o.s. what is my best option here? Any tips on getting the axle out?


hi.

i always use the universal boots that you do not need to take the drive shaft out to fit.
i have not had a problem with these as long as you keep them very clean where you glue them and hold them together while the glue dries in the seam. it only takes 10 minutes start to finish and i have had them last for years without problems. i really would not bother taking the shaft out as you normally have to take the universal joint off the shaft as well to fit the "correct" type boot.

Trying to replace the wheel bearings, cv joints, etc on a 96 toyota corolla. Came apart with no issues, however, when putting it back together, every time I torque the axle nut, it pulls the axle shaft out...


If you bought new drive axles, they may not have given you the right ones (too short) - they did this to me with my 93 Subi - (I own a 93 Toyota Corolla DX).

Make sure that you are pushing the drive axle in as far as it will go into the tranny - and when putting the other end in the hub assembly - make sure it is lining up (there should be grooves on the axle that MUST lign up with the grooves on the inner portion of the hub assembly.

After pushing the drive axle into the driveline you should not be able to pull it out by hand at all (without effort).

I have a 2003 half a ton chevy silverado that the driver side rear axle is leaking. I need to know how to adjust the shims on the ring in pinion ?


well if the axle is leaking you dont need to adjust the shims, it needs a new seal. pull the brakes off open the rear diff there will be a c lip holding the axle in, remove the c lip pull the axle repalce the seal on the end of the axle tube, put it all back together and you done

You will need more than just the length of the housings to do that. you need to know the distance from spring perch to spring perch, distance from perch to backing plate on each side and the offset of the center section, so that when mounted, the driveshafts are not running at an angle. You also need to find the pinion angle at rest: (the amount of upward or downward pitch of the pinion)
In making these measurements you can avoid the possibility of having one axle protruding further past the springs, or damaging universal joints by having them run at an angle that isn't correct.
You can find lots of info on swaps at several online jeep forums. Many of the people there have done swaps and have taken those measurements and have the info you need to do it correctly.
If you have access to a welder, cutting tools and jigs, that opens up numerous possibilities as any differential can be used in any vehicle if it is properly prepared before install!! Just offhand, i don't think that the wagoneer units will fit because it is much wider than a cj. Try jeepforums .com for swap info.

What was the original problem and, did you change entire diff/axle assembly or only one drive axle? (which side?) Before knowing any of this, I suggest you re-check your work to make sure everything is secure and that nothing has gone together crooked.

Rear Axle Seal Replacement


remove rear tires, then remove brake calipers and rotors, then remove the 4 nuts (each side) that hold the axle shafts to the axle tube (located around the axle tube behind the backing plate) then using a slide hammer pull the axle shafts out, next using a die grinder and an air hammer get he retainer collar and the bearing off (without damaging the axle shaft) then remove the seal and the outer race which will still be in the housing. next put it all back together, make sure the plate with the studs is still on then slide the seal, bearing, then retainer on (all new parts) and using a press push them all the way back on. then is simple reassembly.
