Http://www.4x4posi-lok.ca/ this is a website that sells cable style actuators for the chevy pickups. this replaces the thermal actuator with a push pull cable they also sell permanant locks but be forewarned a permanant lock will hurt fuel economy a little. a cable also lets you put your transfer case into 4 LOW and lets you leave the axle disconnected if you need the extra power but do not need the 4wheel drive to work.

You must have synthetic gear lube in the front differential in order for your actuator to last. Regular gear lube is too thick when it is cold and this burns out your actuator. Make sure that the gear lube is changed every coulple of years.

Repair maual for 1997 1500 Z71 pickup with 350 vortex and 4x4

I have a 1997 chevy 1500 350 4x4. My problem is that I can not get my headlights to work. I have checked the fuses inside the truck and under the hood. They are all good. My side markers work, my tail lights works, and even my day time running lights work. The only thing that doesnt work is the headlights. If I turn my head lights on my day time running lights turn off. Does any one have an idea of what could be causing this.

91 chevy 1500 pickup. When I turn the ac on the ac display flashes (never seen that before) and the compressor won't kick on.

you can buy a 4x4 actuator upgrade wiring kit from GM this will allow you to use the one big plug system (plastic actuator) the hardest part is routing one wire (I think brown) up to the floor shifter

The actuator can be tested with hand vacuum tester. I don't believe it will work without the actuator.

I replaced the malfunctioning “thermal actuator” with the “Warn” Vacuum actuator setup, it’s been working great for about 7 years now, simple install, if I remember correctly, it was about $150.
That’s what engages the front diff into 4wd.

It is called a thermostatic actuator; you can purchase one at most auto part stores or at the dealership. I have also seen a manual cable replacement kit that bypasses the thermostatic unit.
