Maybe the engine did run out of gas; if the pump quit working, that is it. Do you hear the pump in the tank turn on for 2 seconds, when turning key to on, not start? It should turn on with key on, to pressurize the fuel system. If you don't hear it, and you don't have gas up to the engine, the pump has failed or the pump circuit needs checked.

Sudden stalls while driving are usually gas or ignition related. And so we say: check for gas, check for spark. If you have no spark on a spark plug wire when cranking the engine over-the ignition system has a fault- will need electrical testing to diagnose it.
Do you know how to check for spark? You will probably need a helper to crank the engine over while you or someone watches for a strong blue spark. If you have it, ignition system is working, check fuel pressure and check injector circuit.
Easy way to check for spark without getting shocked: buy a cheap spark tester from parts store. Plug it into the end of a spark plug wire, and clip the ground clip of tester to a metal piece of engine. Now you will not have to hold the wire close to a ground- don't touch the wire at all when cranking engine: just watch for a blue, snapping spark.

1998 FWD Nissan - drivingg down the road, the truck just stopped running. It tries to turn over. Battery is fine, spark plugs changed out. Coult it be a fuel pump? Also, brand new transmission.

Possibility of alternator, starter, check the easy things first, Fuel pump? take the filter off hold hose if gas is coming out of hose pump is working? I had a similar problem with my 300zx. It was the starter. I dropped the gas tank and cleaned out and sprayed w/air hose carefully the pump just in case there was any debris, still not working, it ended up being the starter. Trust me before u drop a gas tank check the EASY stuff first. Hope this helps

My car sputters/stalls whenever I am at the 1/4 level remaining in if I am out of gas..once I fill up the car runs normal What could be the problem and how do I get the situation corrected?

It seems your car's gas tank needs cleaning. Debris, dirt, or water (moister) will settle at the bottom of the tank and as the car bounces along it lifts up the debris from the bottom . The tank will have to be drained and cleaned. The fuel filter replaced, and the screen on the fuel pump cleaned or replaced. The cause of this is that sometimes people run their cars near empty . When you fill up the car. cleaner fuel will make the car run smooth for a while until it gets to the debris all over again.

Sounds like an electrical problem. Remove all three battery cables , clean them along with the contacts at the battery and replace both bolts. These cars have two positive cables, one to the starter and one to the engine body electrical system. Try this and reply back.

Stalls when under load "driving"

Check the ignition module. My car would run fine until it came up to full temp and then run bad. I continued driving the car while trying to diagnose the problem. It got worse and then one day the car stalled as if it ran out of gas (still had plenty in the tank). I was able to coast it into a parking spot and called for a ride. Upon returning, I tried to start it, started right up and ran fine. On the way home it started acting up again (once it was up to temp). It turned out to be the ignition module.
