Question about 2005 Dodge Caravan

AC freon not circulating in 2005 Dodge Caravan

Condenser and radiator were damaged by unknown object (went straight through the condenser and the smashed into the radiator). Now the repair shop says the AC isn't working (was working prior to the incident). They said there must be a blockage because the Freon won't circulate and are claiming it has nothing to do with the damage and repair to the condenser and radiator. This repair was done under an insurance claim and now they want us to pick up the vehicle (and pay the deductible) and then take it to another repair facility and pay for the diagnostic out of pocket. They claim if it has anything to do with the previous damage/repair then they will reimburse for the diagnostic and pay for additional repairs. Any clue? Thanks!

Make it sure that your compressor is work.. if theres no electrity goin to the compressor.. i think.. only electric fault with the ac system...

It is most likely the evaporator leaking. You'll need to remove the dash panel assembly and the heater housing to gain access. I have replace many Chrysler evaporators in trucks, minivans, and Jeeps to name a few. I hope this helps.

First suggestion is the clutch not engaging. Check voltage at clutch plug and confirm power source, if there is power there then clutch would work unless it has failed.

Cost of repair will depend on which component of the AC system needs repair/replacement. There are several components to the system, with each component costing different amounts and each requiring different amounts of labor to repair or replace.
But, how do you know there is no refrigerant left in the system? Have you had the system charged recently and it leaked out?

The air conditioner on our 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 hemi will not cool the cab when it gets above 70 degrees. There is freon in the system air cold. It's impossible to use in the summer. Any suggestions?


close off the cab circulation to the outside air
make sure that the condenser fan is fully operational
fan in front of the radiator
have an accredited ac specialist check the gas pressures are correct --if there is excessive gas the high pressure switch will shut the ac compressor down
shut off the heater system as it it is a climate control system , there may be still hot air mixing with the ac air

Why does my ac quit working in traffic


At 30 miles per hr you get enough air flow through the condenser coil to keep the A/C cooling. Check the cooling fan at the radiator. It should run when the A/C is on no matter what the engine temperature is. When the freon is low enough to affect cooling it will do the same in traffic or on the road. Engine coolant level has no affect on the A/C,.The condenser is forward of the radiator. You didn't say the car was running hot.

Ac pressure typical automotive system


a typical ac pressure should be around 150-250 on the high side and 20 - 40 on the low side depending on the temperature. If the high side is higher than that check the operation of the condenser fan, or make sure there isnt any leave or debris stuck between the radiator and the condenser

Let me explain in layman's terms how the air conditioning (AC) system works and what could be happening to your car.

Like your body, the air conditioning compressor is the heart of the AC system, and Freon is the blood. The compressor pumps Freon throughout the AC system, either the older type R12 which costs as much as gold it seems these days, or the new environmentally-friendly R134A Freon. This Freon is a gas and liquid combination that is compressed and circulated throughout the air conditioning system. The compressed Freon is pushed through the system under pressure and is passed through different sized metal and rubber hoses and a special valve called an expansion valve that cause the gas to expand and contract.

This expansion and contraction makes the Freon gas very cold. This cold gas makes its way via metal lines into the dash area of your vehicle to the evaporator core. This evaporator core is like a small radiator, except it has cold Freon circulating inside and not hot antifreeze. A small fan (the AC blower fan which you control from the control panel on the dash) sits in front of the evaporator core and blows air across this cold evaporator and then through the vents inside your vehicle.

The other objective of the air conditioning system is to remove the heat from inside the cab of the vehicle. This heat is removed by the Freon with the help of the AC condenser located at the front of the car (usually in front of the radiator). The Freon coming back from the evaporator carries the heat from the cab to the condenser via rubber and metal hoses. Just like your radiator, the condenser is lightweight aluminum with many internal winding coils.
The Freon travels through these coils, and in between these coils are small slits or fins that the Freon is forced through. The condenser will have an electric cooling fan mounted in front or behind it to push or pull air through these fins to remove the heat from the Freon. Some vehicles still use the old fashioned fan blade driven by the engine to pull air across the radiator and the condenser.
Now I know that is just a tidbit of information on how the air conditioning system works, and it is very general, but I wanted you to know what to look for to give you insight as to what might be happening with your vehicle.
A few causes of low cooling efficiency or no cooling at all at idle are:

Lack of air flow across the condenser. Make sure the electric cooling fan motor near the condenser is coming on, or in models that are equipped with a fan blade make sure this fan is turning and is turning very fast.

Low Freon levels. Freon level and pressure should be checked by your certified air conditioning mechanic.

Overheating. If the engine is running hot or overheating, it can have a noticeable negative affect on the air conditioning system. Some cars have two electric cooling fans, one for the air conditioning condenser and the other for the radiator. Make sure they are both working properly. Usually at idle on a hot day with the AC on both fans will be on.

When the vehicle is traveling at freeway speeds, the compressor is pumping the Freon throughout the system much faster and harder than at idle. There is a dramatic increase in air flow across the condenser due to 55 mph winds, and the engine is usually operating at a cooler, more efficient temperature as well, thus allowing the air conditioning system to operate efficiently.
Note: An air conditioning system that is somewhat low on Freon can still feel comfortable at freeway speeds due to the added air flow across the condenser which can overcome the ill effects of slightly low Freon. Periodic air conditioning performance checks by your mechanic are the best way to keep the system in great shape.

The transmission fluid is not coming out of your A/C Condenser for that only carries freon through it on the High side of your A/C System. I may be mistaken, but the condenser is mounted on the right front side (or passenger side) of your vehicle. Insofar as your transmission fluid leaking, there are two lines that go directly to your Radiator, either bolted straight in or at times, have a hose with clamps going down one of the tanks of the Radiator. Usually it's on the Driver's side front. This enables the transmission fluid to cool within the radiator before it returns to the transmission pan. It's a sealed "little radiator" within your Radiator, so if it's not leaking from one of the lines, then follow the lines (through the grille), and see if you have an "air-cooled" transmission cooler in front of the Radiator or Condenser. If your vehicle came with a Trailer Towing Package, then this "cooler" will be in front of the Radiator or Condenser at the lowest point. (it also goes through the radiator as I explained above). If the rubber lines are leaking, then it's pretty simple to replace, BUT you have to use Hoses that are meant for carrying oil or transmission fluid. "Normal" hoses will work for a while and then deteriorate causing the leaking problem again. The last thing to check is your transmission's dip-stick. Yes, if that's pulled up and not seated fully, one of your fans could be spraying the transmission fluid everywhere. Also note, that there's a "vent" in the transmission's dipstick that can be cleaned with compressed air. The purpose of the dipstick having a vent on it is to allow built up pressures to vent to atmosphere
(like your PCV system does for the Engine).

Check the condenser in front of the radiator for any dirt/trash/leaves/anything to block the air flow through the cooling fins. Then check freon level in the a/c unit to see if the proper amount of freon is in the system.(low freon in system will cause little or no a/c). Check under the hood at the fuse/relay panel,lift the top off of panel and look inside the cap for proper location of fuses and relays controlling the a/c system. They will all be labeled and inspect for any fuse/relay that maybe blown in fuse panel. Hope this will help.

1st u have to replace condenser fan and radiator assy , it will solve your problem , cause due to no coolant radiator fan is not working and cause of engine overheating a/c system got trip . replace both condenser fan and radiator and put new coolant. thanks.

Is the AC condenser different than the compressor?


the codensor is in front of the radiator and looks like a thin radiator. the compressor is the pump and is located on the engine and is turned by the surpintine belt.
