SOURCE: idle is not smooth.

Check water for oil, and oil for water. Most likely head gaskets.

SOURCE: Why is my 1987 300e Mercedes making a loud clanging noise at start up?

I would think the honeycomb ceramic "Brick" inside the Catalytic Converter has broken up, makes a terrible rattling when this happens.

I feel heat coming from under my car when at the stop light. What's the problem

Catalytic converter

The exhaust downpipe is glowing red with heat?
To be honest, that may be fuel-air /and or cylinder head problem. A downpipe gets very hot, yes, but they don't glow red.

A faulty oxygen sensor can cause the catalytic converter to overheat - with disastrous results.

If you're not sure what you're doing don't mess around with things. get somebody who knows what they are doing to look at your car and give you an opinion

Could the wrong engine computer, bad injectors or a bad catalytic converter cause my engine to misfire and the exhaust to turn red hot right behind the catalytic converter???

Red hot is the best clue. I suspect a bad converter. Try disconnecting the converter and run to test. Look inside the converter to see if it is clogged with melted stuff or carbon. Bad gas in tank? How could it possibly run well if this is true? Clean tank and use fresh fuel.

2000 olds bravada runs normal but at stops and idle i hear alot of raddeling and vibrations. could it be bad catalytic converter?

If you do a lot of city driving then the catalytic can fail between 150k to 170k.

It usually start with high heat (RED HOT CAT) ,rotten egg smell and loss of power.

I have a 1997 hondai Sonata. All gears works fine but i cant go over 50/55 without the rpm going over 3000 rpm? It does have an over drive swith and a extra power swith. both which seem to do nothing.

Sounds like the problem lies in the catalytic converter, a bad catalytic converter that restricts the flow of exhaust gases from the engine and limits the power and speed of the vehicle. If you need more help on how to repair your catalytic converter, I would suggest checking out this site How To section Repair catalytic converter - Buy Auto Parts

2001 Nissan Sentra. Car starts with no power, but after a few restarts, gain power again. Code is PO420.

Hi, P0420 code means a catalytic converter fault.
The catalytic converter has an oxygen sensor in front and behind it. When the vehicle is warm and running in closed loop mode, the upstream oxygen sensor waveform reading should fluctuate. The downstream O2 sensor reading should be fairly steady. Typically the P0420 code triggers the Check Engine Light if the readings of the two sensors are similar. This is indicative of (among other things) a converter that is not working as efficiently as it should be (according to specs). It is part of the vehicle emissions system.
  • Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, pipes, catalytic converter. Repair as required.
  • Use a scope to diagnose the oxygen sensor operation (Tip: The oxygen sensor in front of the catalytic converter normally has a fluctuating waveform. The waveform of the sensor behind the converter should be more steady).
  • Inspect the downstream heated oxygen sensor (HO2), replace if necessary
  • Replace the catalytic converter

You got it, definetely is the symptoms of a bad catalytic converter including the smell.
Fortunately there is only one
Unfortunately they are very costly
You may also notice that if the vehicle is idling for awhile and you look underneath the exhaust may be glowing red in some areas, extremely hot
Hope this helps
