Maybe the speedo itself or wiring coming in behind it is loose.

SOURCE: 1996 Chevy K1500 4L60 Transmission having problems

The vehicle speed sensor is not working, it is located in the transmission tailshaft. The computer uses this speed info to shift the transmission, and tell when the rear wheels are locked up so the ABS will function.

Local auto part stores have this part available, but possibly as a PDQ, or next day delivery to your local store.

1999 chevy suburban k1500 4wd eletrical problems?

As far as the speedometer not working and the transmission not shifting; I'd check the speed sensor connection on the tail of the transmission and follow the wiring to see if it is cut somewhere. If the PCM doesn't get a signal from the speed sensor, the transmission won't shift. Did the auto have wires get chewed by rats after sitting?

1994 chevy 1500 4 x 4. Transmission wont shift and speedometer quit working

Chances are that the vehicle speed sensor has failed. This would cause all the symptoms that you mention. If the computer doesn't seen any speed, then it has no reason to shift the transmission up and out of first gear. And of course, there would be no speed shown on the speedometer.

Speed sensor is most likely goin or gone out. It is located on the drivers side of the transmission tailshaft. Speed information runs through the cruise control and the computer to the speedometer.

Speed odometer not working for a 1992 gmc sierra

I suggest you ntake it to a transmission shop. The cable that runs the speedometer runs from gauge to output shaft on transmission. If cable and gayge are a-ok then its the gear that the cable runs to on the output shaft., which means a transmission type of repair.

Does my truck have abs brakes? It is 4x4 1992 chevy 1500

Your truck is equipped with RWAL or rear wheel anti-lock. This just worked on the rear brakes(duh) but the speed sensor was taken from the speedometer drive at the transmission tailshaft, and would allow one rear wheel to lock as long as the speedo kept turning. Later models were improved with wheel speed sensors at each wheel.

Swapping auto tansmission for manual

Yes, the current ECM you have is calibrated for an automatic transmission. The PROM will not recognize the manual transmission.
You will want to change the engine harness and ECM.
There will be a number of things you are going to want to look into before starting.
Good luck.

Speedometer runs erratic and transmissions drops to second gear.

The ECM or TCM may be the culprit, its also possible that a ground wire is no longer grounded or partially grounded giving you the erratic speedometer.
