Xterra brakes I replaced the brake pads and the brake pedal is soft when applied, it also takes a while before it comes to a complete stop and the pedal has to be depressed all the way in order for them to work

Need to bleed the calipers of air.. takes a few minutes to do..be sure to fill the master cylinder between wheels..

SOURCE: Brake pedal pulsates when appling brakes

If the new rotors were not allow to seat after replacement they will warp extremely easily. Easy to check. Remove wheel and check for trueness of rotor, a dead give away is if you see a blueish tint on the rotor.

there is a ground problem, most likely in the tail unit itself, but a ground problem is hard to find and easy to fix. reground the system, the turning unit, and the problem should stop. About the hazards, I don't know...... some times in older cars, that is the way it works. because the brake and hazard element in the bulb is the same and the old cars used a break in the power, but the new cars use a break in the ground. any way, chase the ground down first, it is usually the cause.

SOURCE: Brake pedal goes down to floor. Putting brake fluid doesn't solve problem. Vehicle must coast to a complete stop.

First look for obvious leaks under the vehicle, especially the inside area of each wheel... If you see fluid, you have either a blown cylinder seal or a bad line (check the rubber hoses to the front and back brakes too) Repair the offending part and bleed the air out of the system... (remember to clean pads or shoes if they have fluid on them)... If you see no hint of leakage anywhere, then suspect the master cylinder... if you remove the master cylinder, check and make sure that it didn't leak fluid into the brake booster diaphragm (Brake fluid will destroy the booster)... as in any repair when you open the system (lose fluid), you will need to bleed out the air to restore function... hope this helps...;-)

Sounds like the pistons bound up in the calipers. Remove the calipers and attempt to seat the pistons in the calipers with a screw clamp. If no go, that's the problem. They can be replaced, but most folks just get a whole new caliper these days.

Vw golf 2000 the brake pedal is to soft when you apply it and seems like is not going to stop but it does, what is the problem?

BRAKE BOOSTER INSPECTION

Functional test:
1. With the engine stopped, Depress the brake pedal several times, then depress the pedal hard and hold that pressure for 15 seconds. If the pedal sinks, the master cylinder, brake line or a brake caliper is faulty
2. Start the engine with the pedal depressed. If the pedal sinks slightly, the vacuum booster is working. If the pedal height does not vary, the booster or the check valve is faulty

Leak Test:
1. Depress the brake pedal with the engine running then stop the engine. If the pedal height does not vary while depressed for 30 seconds, the vacuum booster is OK. If the pedal rises, the booster is faulty
2. With the engine stopped, depress the brake pedal several times using normal pressure. When the pedal is first depressed, it should be low. On consecutive applications, the pedal height should gradually rise. If the pedal position does not vary, check the booster check valve.

Check valve test:
1. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose at the booster.
2. Start the engine and let it idle. There should be a vacuum available. If no vacuum is available, the check valve is not working correctly. Replace the check valve and retest.

Brake pedal soft after changing pads and bleeding brakes


You will need to bleed the brake system. I would start with the rear brakes lines and work towards the front.You must have key off engine off when bleeding brakes, apply pressure on brake pedal 10 times and hold. The brake line is now ready to be open. Open and let the stream of fluid come out and close the line tight. Then release brake pedal once bleeder screw is close. This procedure must be repeated twice front and back. After, brakes have been bleed pump the brake pedal before putting in drive.
Note: Don't let the resevoir run low on brake fluid. This will cause air bubbles to accumulate on the brake system. Always top off before opening bleeder screw.

no worn pads do not cause a sinking pedal, you have a defective brake master cylinder, the seals inside the master cylinder are leaking

I am working on a 2004 dodge caravan with a soft brake problem.i have replaced the rear shoes and adjusted rear brakes,also replaced front rotors and pads.i have also replaced the master cylinder.after...


try bleeding the master cylinder at the lines first as it indicates that there is still air in the pistons
loosen one line at a time and gently apply the brakes until any air bubbles come out tighten the line before releasing the brake pedal
do it for the other line and then bleed all the brakes starting at the longest line first and ending at the shortest line

Replaced rear brake pads, now there is a hissing sound coming from brake pedal when i start it , come to complete stop and after i turn car off .what is the hissing or air pressure release sound coming...


There are 2 things that can use vacuum near the brake pedal. If you have cruise control, there is a safety switch on the pedal to shut off the curise when you apply the brake. This switch may be leaking.
The other part is the brake booster, which is actually in the engine compartment but bolts to the firewall, and your brake pedal mechanism pushes into the booster. You will need to get your head under the dash with the engine running and press on the pedal to locate the leak--on the switch or on the wall.

I have a 2001 xterra and my brake lights does not go off. I assume that it might be the brake switch and I can not locate it.


At the top of the brake pedal arm there is a switch. This is the brake light switch. Most of the time they get out of adjustment. So, get on your back and look up, under the dash, above the brake pedal arm and you should see the stop. The stop is actually the switch. When the brake is not applied this is what the brake pedal arm rests against. The pivot point is much higher in the dash. So, follow the pivot point down and you should see the switch. hi from the uk have had this problem on a customers car b4 who had replaced frot calipers and pads and pedal went to floor on inspection of caliper i found that the steel spring clip that fits into two holes in the front face of caliper and must also locate behind the caliper carrierbehind two lugs was fitted incorrectly it had been fitted behind the outer pad resulting in when brake pedal off ?the caliper being floating type as it is known because it is fixed by two screw pins/bolts and moves on these pins/bolts as pads wear ? what happens is the spring fitted wrongly ? actually pushes against the outer pad and as a result the caliper piston is pushed back into its cylinder slightly as it moves on the locating pins/bolts resulting in pedal going to floor on 1st application but if pumped ? some brake pedal force is felt but is lost again when pedal released ? so try this ? remove the steel clips from both front calipers that retain caliper to carriers then press brake/pump pedal ? if as suggested above works? your pedal should pump up and remain ok when you release and still be firm when re applied ? all above is what i found on ford ford but many other models use similar calipers and spring locating recheck how this spring should locate hope this helps ? good luck

Why are brakes soft on 02 nissan xterra? No air


You brake master cylinder is either low or faulty. Check your fluid level, if that is good you need to have this repaired as soon as possible as it could lead to brake failure.

the brakes have to be bleed you wrote that when you start the car the pedal goes to the floor that means the booster is working fine take it back and tell them you want the brakes bleed
