DTC P0708 - Transmission Range Sensor Circuit High Input

Check your transmission range sensor.
There is a connector located where the cable attaches to the tranny on the back (firewall side). Be sure its connected and seated properly.

From what I understand the "range sensor" is basically the Input Turbine Speed Sensor. Be sure the connector for this is also clean. This code is also set by the Nuetral Safety switch. Check the switch with a multi meter to be sure its working properly.

Also, check your Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor. This sensor is used by the PCM to help control tranny operations.

Also, can check this additional information for
1998 Saturn SL1...

DTC P0706
The PCM determines which gear is selected by a combination of opens and grounds in circuits 771, 772, and 773 at the transaxle park/neutral
position switch. Each combination indicates a specific selection on the
manual shift quadrant, P, R, N, D, 2, or 3. Circuit 776 is either open
or grounded to produce an even number of grounded circuits, 771, 772,
773, and 776. Invalid data indicates that the sum of the grounded
circuits 771, 772, 773, and 776, in 1 of the manual shift quadrants is
equal to an odd number.

Conditions for Setting the DTC
DTC P0706 is set when the PCM has detected an invalid bit pattern for
more than 3.5 seconds, twice per ignition cycle.

The difference between DTC P0706 and DTC P0705 is that a possible bit pattern error due to misadjustment could set a DTC P0706.

Test Description
1. This step verifies the conditions for DTC P0706 still exist.
2. If the shift cable or switch is misadjusted, a DTC P0706 may set
while in certain gear shift positions.
3. DTC P0706 may set due to 1 or more circuits being shorted to
ground. By disconnecting the switch, the PCM should read all circuits as high and the scan tool should display OPEN.
4. This step will isolate an open circuit. As each individual circuit
is grounded, the PCM/TCM should see the low signal and the tool should display INVALID.
5. The PCM/TCM supplies a 12 volt signal to each transaxle park/neutral position switch circuit. This step tests for that voltage.
6. DTC P0706 may have been set due to 1 of the circuits being shorted
to voltage. This step verifies if a short to voltage exists.

Repair Verification
Monitor DTC menu Code Status for Pass Since Code Clear and Pass This Ignition Cycle. When both have passed, the repair is verified.

Criteria for pass:
* No active DTC set.
* Two valid selector positions are decoded. You must move the
shifter to obtain a pass.

Diagnostic Aids
When the PCM detects a fault in the circuit, an open, ground, or short,
the PCM will open the circuit internally to protect the circuit.

If no circuit problems can be detected, check the shift cable and switch
adjustment.

Important
Refer to the chart from DTC P0705.

This DTC will cause the transaxle to start out in 2nd gear.

Hope helps (remember rated this).

SOURCE: when we place the car

P0700 sets in the engine controller when there is a code stored in the trans controller. That code applies to the transmission control system, but additionally, there are definitely more codes stored in the Trans Controller. The first thing we need to do is get these codes, I'm supposed that is the P0841 ( ). To confirm, they will have to be read with a code reader or scan tool. Almost all parts stores will read codes for free.

If this is right and your other code is the P0841 is for the Low/Reverse Pessure Switch in the solenoid pack mounted on the front of the transmission. This code can be caused by a few things.

First make sure the fluid is full. If the fluid is low and you are having delayed engagement problems when the car is first started it can set this code. If the fluid is low top it off with ATF+4, clear the codes, check for leaks, and see if the code returns. If it does return or if the fluid is full then the problem is probably electrical.

Also, it could be the pressure switch itself, the wiring between the Trans and the Engine/Trans Controller (PCM or Powertrain Control Module), or the PCM itself. If the fluid level is ok and you aren't having any engagement problems then the pressure switch is probably bad, and it would require solenoid pack replacement. The solenoid pack is mounted on the front of the trans with the bolt-on 8 way connector.

Here some tips diagnostic procedure (clikc over each image for zoom)...

zjlimited_713.gif

zjlimited_714.gif

zjlimited_715.gif

zjlimited_716.gif

This DTC will set if the TCM senses the L/R Pressure Switch closing while performing PEMCC or FEMCC or after two unsuccessful attempts to perform PEMCC or FEMCC.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:
RELATED DTC P0841 PRESENT
L/R PRESSURE SWITCH INOPERATIVE
INTERMITTENT OPERATION
TRANSMISSION RELAY OUTPUT CIRCUIT OPEN
L/R PRESSURE SWITCH SENSE CIRCUIT OPEN
L/R PRESSURE SWITCH SENSE CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND
L/R PRESSURE SWITCH SENSE CIRCUIT SHORT TO VOLTAGE
TCM - SOLENOID SWITCH VALVE

Finally I would trying re-programming it first and if that dont fixed your going to need to replace your Trans Control Module.

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch

I had a similar problem in my Mazda truck before. There is a pressure switch on the side of my truck's automatic gear box. The switch is connected to the engine vacuum system. When the switch leaks, the vacuum sucked the transmission oil through the vacuum line to the engine over time. Have you checked your transmission oil level? If the oil level is low, that's probably the reason. I was still able to drive back home by adding sufficient amount of transmission oil.

Good luck.

1 Answer

Loss of power, transmission issues

code p0700 refers to transmission control system/MIL --malfunction===causes --wiring ---TCM (1)
code po740 refers to torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid--circuit malfunction===causes--wiring--TCC solenoid--ECM/TCM (transmission control module) (again)
code p0871 refers to transmission fluid pressure (TFP) sensor C -range/ performance problem==causes---wiring--poor connection--TFP sensor--ECM /TCM (yet again)
code p0734 refers to gear 3 ratio (po374 is gear ratio 4) incorrect ratio===causes --wiring--TR sensor/switch--shift solenoids--transmission mechanical fault (causes are the same for po733&734)
code po846 refers to transmission fluid pressure (TFP) sensor B-range/ performance problem===causes ---wiring--poor connection--TFP sensor--ECM/TCM (again). Give the clutch a miss as you still have 1st gear and if the clutch is not working you will not be going any where. Have a pressure test done on the transmission to check for internal mechanical failures (pump ). The rest are sensors are wiring connections , sensor and TCM. My bet is the TCM unit. Have it checked out. What ever you do treat any suggestion of a new transmission with a grain of salt until you are shown proof positive that you need one.

DTC P0846 - Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch "B" Circuit Range/Performance

The pressure sensor codes are the ones to concentrate on first. typically gear ratio error codes are set from internal transmission failures but since you also have pressure sensor codes it may just need a new sensor. Remove the connector to the solenoid pack and check for broken or damaged pins and also see if water is getting into the connector.

The chances are that the sensor is bad. If that is the only code your getting then you might want to replace the sensor. Make sure the trans is full though, as that would make the pressure low and could set the code. Here is where the sensor is.

REMOVAL
1. Raise vehicle.
2. Place a suitable fluid catch pan under the transmission.

2_14_2012_3_14_19_pm.gif

1. Remove the wiring connector from the line pressure sensor (Fig. 83).
2. Remove the bolt holding the line pressure sensor to the transmission case.
3. Remove the line pressure sensor from the transmission case.

INSTALLATION
1. Install the line pressure sensor into the transmission case.
2. Install the bolt to hold the line pressure sensor into the transmission case. Tighten the bolt to 11.9 Nm (105 in. lbs.) .
3. Install the wiring connector onto the line pressure sensor
4. Verify the transmission fluid level. Add fluid as necessary.
5. Lower vehicle.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.
