Question about 1990 Mazda Protege

1 Answer

Rear passenger turn signal won't work

I have a 1990 Mazda Protege that a has rear passenger turn signal light that won't come on. I tried changing the bulb but it didn't fix it. When you look at the dash when I signal to turn right it seems to blink quicker than when I signal left. Also, and this is very strange, what does light up when I signal right is my rear drivers side back-up light. Can anybody help me?

Make sure you have the correct replacement bulb for that car. Some bulbs do more than one thing.

1992 mazda protege dx 4 dr won't start. Battery is only 2 months old. Makes a fast ticking sound from inside car similar to turn signal light out.

Hi Robin, As the battery is new and presumably not defective, I think you should suspect the soloniod fitted to the starter motor. If that component has become defective it will give the sound you're reporting. Depending on where you live in the world and the labour charges, you can have the contacter's replaced or the starter motor (if labour charges are high) Regards John

Mazda protege turn signal

Sounds like a short between the circuit for the 4-Ways and the multi-function switch (The lever that operates the turn signals). Have the system checked by a qualified mechanic.

The taillights on my 1990 Protege don't work. The headlights (both high and low beams), brake lights, reverse lights, and turn signals all work, and I've replaced the bulbs, which did not fix the problem....

Your Protege has a dedicated fuse for the tailight circuit, as well as a relay. The fuse should be located in the passenger compartment fuse box, but it could be located in the main fuse box in the engine compartment drivers side inside fender area. It should be labeled TAILIGHT, and be 15A, or 20A. The relay is most likely in the main fuse box as well, but I can't tell from the attached drawing so you'll have to track it down if necessary.

Left turn signal on 1991 Mazda Protege will not work. I changed the bulb and that did not solve the problem. The flashers work and the right turn signal is OK. Just the left turn will not work. Any ideas ?

Could be the switch itself. Pretty easy to replace the whole turn signal switch. I've had the flashers go out also on mine, but mine ended up being the switch. I grabbed one from a recycling yard, cost me less than $20.

The main panel of lights on the rear of my 98 Mazda have gone out. The turning signal and the rear window brake light work and the rear the side lights work, and the light over the license plate works,...

I have same problem and have found the lower light to have a malfunction in the socket. Mazda says replace brake harness. Cheap fix junk yard but same prob can come back. Also does your cruise work? may be related to switch on brake pedal.

1997 Mazda protege lx. turn signals stop working when headlamps are turned on, right indicator stays solid on dash cluster?

most of the time problems with lights are directly linked to fuses. locate your fuses and check for burned out ones.

No brake lights

Sounds like it is your brake light switch which is located on the brake pedal itself.  Should cost around $20 at autozone and is pretty easy to change out yourself.  Thanks for rating my response and for using FixYa!

Can't find the turn signal or emergency flasher fuse for 1998

Conrad, up north.
My protege is a '99. The turn signals and hazard flashers use the same flasher unit. It is located under the dash to the left of the steering wheel and above and a bit to the right right of the driver's side fuse box.
