Question about 1986 Pontiac Firebird

1 Answer

Why can't I get my car to idle right and stay alive?

I have a 1986 Pontiac Trans Am that has a fuel injected 5.0 L 305. My problem is that I can't get her to idle right and stay alive. she will stay alive when I'm driving on the highway and the rpm's are above 2000. I have replaced the intake gaskets, the governor for the tranny, the thermostat, fuel injectors, fuel filter, all the tubing, the throttle body sensor, hopefully i found all the vacuum leaks, and my dad and I just found bare wires touching and covered in grease. I've only put in less than $200 worth of parts.

My choke light stays on my 84 pontiac trans am. Why does this occurr and how can i fix this problem?

I bevieve that year is 305 or 350 with Throttle body injection so remove air cleaner cover start car allow to warm up then see if plate below main injector opens when engine is revved ..if it does then be sure it is partially open at idle .. check wiring underside of air cleaner / loose / heat damaged -----Or if Aftermarket air cleaner then unplugged wires from factory must be looped to create all ok signal .....The Throttle plate at base of unit or old style carb can wear creating unstable idle or choke light signal due to inconsistant air flow ..

I am trying to get a 1986 nissan truck i just got to stay running.it will start and idle a couple seconds then dies.its throttle body fuel injected

sounds like a fuel filter, or fuel pump, or could be spark related such as coil breaking down or bad igniter if so equipped

1986 Pontiac 6000 STE Idels Rough

Hello.
Look at your fuel injection system. There are certain companies that will clean your fuel injecton for you for about $125-145.00.
They will attach a bottle of cleaning solution over the engine and will keep the engine running for about 1-hour while the cleaning fluid courses through the engine. This cleaning system was developed by Snap On back in the early 1990's.
Hopefully, this will work.
Most Sincerely, Kristopher

My car does not like to start/ stay running

Check the coolant temperature sensor. The thick black smoke is an indication it is flooding or getting to much fuel. The CTS is critical for fuel metering on start up.
