remember the fans are only suppose to come on at about 200 degrees or one will come on as soon as you turn on the AC ..

The fan relay is bad not the sensor. Replace the relay

IT KEEPS OVERHEATING

REPLACE THE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP.IF COOLANT LOW, ADD MORE COOLANT THROUGH COOLANT OVERFLOW UNTIL COOLANT LEVEL IN THE COOLANT OVERFLOW STAY AT FULL COLD MARK.REASON POUR COOLANT THROUGH COOLANT OVERFLOW MOST GM CARS DONT HAVE RADIATOR CAP.WHEN YOU GET COOLANT LEVEL OKAY, CRANK CAR LET IT IDLE UNTIL ENGINE GET HOT BUILD UP PRESSURE THEN TURN OFF CAR.CHECK FOR COOLANTS LEAKS AT THE RADIATOR HOSES,CHECK FOR LEAKS AT THE RADIATOR, CHECK FOR LEAKS AT WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE IF YOU SEE COOLANT LEAKING FROM WEEP HOLE REPLACE WATER PUMP. IF CAR OVERHEATING WHILE IDLING YOUR COOLING FANS NOT WORKING CHECK COOLING FANS FUSE AND RELAYS.IF FUSE AND RELAYS OKAY THE ENGINECOOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR BAD.

I have a 99 Cadillac Deville which is overheating and I think it is the thermostat. Can I do this myself? Is it easy to get at? I do have some mechanical skills.

you need to make sure the fans are turning on to cool the engine down first, the fans won't kick on until the coolant reaches 212 degrees ,make sure your not losing coolant ant radiator is full, check it when the engine is cold, the north star engines have a flaw in the head gaskets leaking,

99 deville head gasket leak?

A head gasket leak is usually indicated (among other things) by continous overheating of the motor, and subsequent loss of coolant.
It can also be indicated by the presence of engine combustion gas bubbles in the coolant resevoir.
Ensure the coolant system has no external leaks, such as faulty hose/s, radiator etc.

Ensure motor tune or other motor mechanical condition is not the cause of overheating.
I assume the motor is actually running hot.

Check cooling fans are operating ok (as necessary when car warms up):- if not check
1) fuse,
2) relay operation,
3) heat sensor switch.

Check/replace the thermostat,
Check the coolant pressure cap is serviceable & of correct rating,
Ensure cooling system is correctly filled, bleed off any airlocks as necessary when re-filling,
Ensure radiator hose on suction side of waterpump is not collapsing at engine revs above idle (due softening),
If the motor has been severely overheated, the head gasket could be blown - look for combustion gas bubbles in the coolant resevoir.

Overheading 99 deville

The fans don't kick in until around 225 degrees.

As for the overheating, Check for coolant flow at the Purge line, this is a common problem on the Northstar.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank, this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating. If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.

Regarding the misfiring, have you changed your spark plug cables?

VERY IMPORTANT....only use AC Delco spark plugs and wires.

Spark plugs ....AC Delco part number 41950

Plug wires....AC Delco part number 748Q

Ignition problems are common if you use anything other than the above OEM parts.
