the fan power is controlled at the last point by a relay
that relay gets the signal from the ECM which relies on the coolant temperature sensor to report on coolant temperature and the need to cool it down
If there is a problem in that relay ( points burnt together then the fan will run continuously as the power is direct from the battery
first fix is too replace that relay with a known good one and if it still runs then you will have to trace back each component and fuse until you find the faulty unit
It could possibly be a faulty coolant SENSOR ( don't confuse with a coolant sender which works the gauge)
Hi, the relay is turned on by the PCM based on data from the coolant temperature sensor. Disconnecting the sensor sends the computer into safe mode so it keeps the fan on. Check the sensor wire continuity to the PCM. If good, try replacing the sensor. Please let me know if you have more questions.
Hi, it sounds like an electrical/sensor problem. In general terms you have two primary switches that will trigger the fan to run. The first is the temperature sensor, the latter is the air conditioning electrics. You may have a bad sensor, or relay somewhere in the electrical lines that run power to the fan.If you don't have them, get a decent electical multitester and a copy of the Hayne's/Chilton's manual for the car (both good investments in general). Work your way across the circuit for the fan motor. In specific, test the relays and temperature sensors to make sure they are not fused open.Your electrical diagnostics will tell you what to replace. Take care
CHECK COOLING FAN FUSE AND RELAY.IF BOTH GOOD SCAN CAR TO CHECK COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR FAULT CODE.THE PCM AND COOLANT TEMP. SENSOR IS WHAT CAUSE FAN TO RUN AT CERTAIN TEMPERATURE.IF ALL IS GOOD.HOT WIRE COOLING FAN USING JUMPER WIRES TO BATTERY.IF FAN DONT RUN REPLACE FAN MOTOR.IF FAN RUNS YOU HAVE SHORT OR BROKE WIRE IN THE COOLING FAN ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR.
You may have an issue with the temperature sensor found at the lower radiator hose. Pull out the plug connected to it and see if the fan would run continuously while the key is on "ON". If it does run, have the temperature sensor replaced and if it does not, check the relay and the wiring that goes to the fan.
CHECK FUSE AND RELAY.IF ALL IS GOOD.HOT WIRE COOLING FAN USING JUMPER WIRES.USING CAR BATTERY.IF FAN RUNS.ITS GOOD.IF FAN DONT RUN.REPLACE FAN ELECTRIC MOTOR.ALSO SCAN IT. TO MAKE SURE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR IS NOT OPEN.MAKE SURE ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR AND COOLANT TEMPERATURE READS SAME ON SCANNER IF NOT REPLACE THE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR. SEE IF COOLANT TEMPERATURE IS BAD THE COOLING FAN OR FANS WONT RUN.
assuming fuse and relay are good..no fan should be running when the engine is cool/cold, the only time the fan should be running when it reach over operation temperature which then the fan kick on to bring the temperature back down to it operation temperature. both fan work in sync with one another, addition cooling is needed when the ac is running. when the last time have you replace thermostat and Thermos sensor/switch. I would replace both unit if you have not done so. The thermos/switch will turn the fan on when it reachcertaintemperature and cut off when it sense the temperature drop in the engine.
1997 Plymouth Neon, have replaced radiator, radiation cap, thermostate and hoses, still run hot. Fans do not seem to come on, where is the temperature sensor on this vehicle?
