This is caused by a seazed parking brake cable. You'll need to replace it. They are avalible at your local parts stores for a low cost.

SOURCE: my emergency brake release cable

Loosen the cable adjusters located underneath the vehicle. You should be able to take the tension out of the cables so the brakes will release.

Emergency brake light on and will not turn off. replaced brake light switch at pedal emergency brake releases and light gets dimmer. Brake fluid full no leaks.

That light is for the brake system as well as the E-brake, so check the brake fluid level sensor, if that is ok you may have a defective master cylinder.

Why is my emergency brake light staying on after i changed the rear brakes

it could be the e-brake may not be completely down allowing the switch to not be pushed all the way off, also the switch may be out of alignment not in the proper place. if the e-brake cable sticks a little it may the handle up enough to not turn off the switch.

its possible the switch on the e/brake unit broke, take a flashlight and locate a single/double wire that goes to the e/brake assembly (this is the piece you depress with your left foot) and look to see if the wire is broken or the switch the wire goes to is broken.

2004 explorer brake light will blink here and there while driving

check and make sure brake fluid is full, if so then the emergency brake has a switch on it that will make the brake light come on. to check this get in vehicle and push emergency brake then release it then take your hand and wiggle the emergency brake peddle and see if the light comes on and off. if so then the peddle is not comming all the way up against the switch this may be solved by just pulling up on the peddle each time the emergency brake is released,

there is a problem with the switch on your parking brake. my suggestion is, disassemble the switch and test with a multimeter if it's busted then replace it or repair the switch if you can.
