What can cause the dimmer switch on a 1989 Cadillac Seville to turn on and all of a sudden not want to switch to the high beam again?

No...the lever does not feel loose but when I lift the lever to switch to the high beam it won't click in to set high beam on and the indicator light on the dash does not turn on. Thanks for your help!

This is too long after your post, you probably flogged your car by now, but the problem you describe sounds like a sick headlamp relay. The steering column switch does not make contact with the lights directly, it clicks a relay on and off. It this is wonkey, it will switch on the dims, but will not respond to the signal from the dimmer switch.

This car does not have a dimmer switch like a buick , chevrolet or pontiac., they are controlled by a relay. The dimmer switch is part of the turn signal multifunction switch.

The dimmer switch operates an actuator that pushes on a rod and then that rod goes down the steering column and pushes on the actual dimmer switch which is near the bottom of the steering column, u will need to remove the trim under the steering column and then the must remove the 2 nuts that hold the column to the bottom of dash, carefully lay the column on the seat and then u will have access to the dimmer switch, actuate the switch and see if the rod moves, if it doesn't then u must replace the dimmer switch rod actuator plastic piece at the top of the column, if it does move up and down either the dimmer switch has come loose or the dimmer switch is defective.

Could be a couple of things. One would be that the dimmer switch has over time come loose and is now out of adjustment. Or the plastic piece in the column that pushes the rod that goes to the switch has broke. Or the switch is bad.

1999 cadillac seville wiring diagram

Check wiring with a test light or volt meter. switch lights to low beam, connect volt meter N probe to a good ground then probe the light socket for the low beam power cable, should show battery voltage, now switch to high beam and test for battery voltage if ok remove the grounded meter probe and probe the cable in the socket that you have not tested this is the ground cable, battery voltage should show if ground cable is ok. If no voltage repair cable ,If voltage present check filament on bulb high beam perhaps the new bulb is faulty.

High beams will flash but will not stay on.Maybe blown fuse?

Usually a problem with the dimmer switch. A mechanic would check for power at the dimmer switch for both circuits.

if this lever is part of the turn signal switch it might be faulty , also the auto dimming might be picking up glare from the bumper check the sensor and make sure it is clean.

1989 Lincoln towncar cartier with electronic dash and auto dimmers. Driving with headlights on they suddenly turn off then back on then off.

hello, this is posaably a bad or loose ground in the circuit, it could even be in the headlamp switch itself. does the problem exist in the high beams as well?......good luck, marty
