Somewhere along the lines something other than PS fluid was put in there...More than likly a high deteregent fluid (at fluid, brake fluid). Somepeople have done this for a quick fill....which can ultimately lead to wear and tear of seals overtime they will deteriate into the fluid makeing it discolored then it will slightly burn giving it a darker color and funny smell..If this is not the case where no sub was added to the resivoir, then something is falty in the power stearing pump mechinisim..Or if you race the car on a track with high turns excessive use can also lead to a break down in the fluids make up....make sure on the next change to fully drain out all old fluid and flush it with a half qt of new fluid b4 you refill with new...Hope this was helpful for you...

The transmission fluids smelled burnt and look very brown and thick

You can try and have the fluid and filter changed, but if the smell and discolor comes back, it's time to have the tranny rebuilt or replaced.

is the clutch power assisted(vacuum)?if so couldvery well have some bearing on what is happening.I WILL TELL YOU A STOREY.A couple of months ago I changed the clutch master cyl. on my land cruiser and because I do all my own work still I didnot obey the golden rule..3days later i changed the slave cyl...l again did not obay the golden rule...... 2 days later iagain pulled the master cyl off cleaned it all out, but this time I OBEYED THE GOLDEN RULE,WHICH IS::always change the brake fluid when ever you change amaster cylinder either brake or clutch or when I was doing work for other people,if the brakes were worked on or the clutch you drained the sytem and relaced the fluid...ANY COMMERCIAL WORKSHOP THAT DOES NOT DO THIS IS GOING TO HAVE COMEBACKS may only be 5or10% but for a $5container of fluid it isn` t worth the chance I was in that5 or 10 % are you? that is true, not more than 3 months ago give it some thought ....................

Honda accord lx 1996 6 transmission dipstick

For the V-6 model, the dipstick is located down low on the transaxle, on the drivers side of the car, if it is low, usually 1 pint of of fluid is needed to raise from low notch to high notch. also if it appears to be dark or burnt, smells burnt, you should replace the tranaxle fluid. Good Luck!

did you drain the fluid, it may have lots of metal and be really gummed up causing it to over heat and burn off. Aside from that the most commonly overlooked "check engine" proplem is the O2 sensors, there should be 2 of them
