Question about 1993 Chevrolet C1500

Wont go in gear without dying down

The man i got it from said it backfired 2 months ago but ran fine after that, but had to spin 2 times in the morning to start it, used to be first try and would fire rite up, then one morning it just wouldnt crank at all so i got it and have done replaced the timing chain and gears and the ignition module in the distributor, it cranks only when it wants to, i have to set the timing high by the distributor to crank it and it purrs when idleing, but drop it in gear and it deisels down, and if i try to rev it up from an idle in park it backfires and pops thru the throttle body!! i'v been a tech for 12 years and know my **** here, but cannot figure this one out! timing is very close, ignition module is new, and the fuel pump is only 8 months old! anybody gotta clue? im thinkin the computer, but not sure yet!

    i left out that i have changed the spark control module also, i also noticed that the injectors click alot! like when they are finished with the initial prime when the fuel pump stops, the injectors click several times, but no gas is sprayed until i actually spin the engine over, which is normal! just the clicking is interesting! i also might add that the engine will rev with the timing high as long as i slowly ease into it... and also this is the only time i can put it in gear to move it at all... power brakeing in gravel is even a joke! but if i turn down the timing all i can do is let it idle, cannot give gas, cannot put in gear! but idles like a charm, no smoke no missing, nothing but a good clean smell comming from the pipes! and it has dual exhaust, no converter!

    it just acts like it has a mind of its own! it only cranks when it wants to and usually its when i have the timing set high by the distributor, when it dont crank all it does is either a dead spin, having fuel and fire i dont see how it dead spins, but it does, and sometimes it backfires really loud out of the tail pipes, and at other times it will spit back thru the throttle body!! i have another truck just like it, kinda, its not extended cab and its got the 4.3 v6, have had it for 7 years, but this new one is racking my nerves!!

    i took the top half of the throttle body apart and the spring in the pressure regulator is broke!! gonna get a repair kit for it, everybody tells me to replace the whole throttle body, but im here to tell ya that its alot easier just to take the 8 torque screws out and pop off the top that holds the injectors down, the reg comes off with it, 4 more screws, take off the reg cover and the spring is broke, this will cause alot of problems!!!

    Danny, i have to say that your input helped the problem tremendously! thank you very much, now it is running alot better, still one problem, its timed up, got the distributor in the closest possible setting without a timing light, and i replaced the spark plugs... but if i floor it from an idle, it tends to pop back throught the throttle body, it threw up a flame one time! but continued to run, the popping does not kill the engine and it revs on up after the popping, and its not a wore cam lobe or a floated lifter, its more like a backfire thru the carb. also, it idles perfectly, but after idling for a minute or so it dies! never fails! it will die if you let it idle for a couple minutes, just like turning the key off! the only thing i can think of is the electronic control module inside the distributor, but i had it checked and tested good, and also its the module out of my other truck, it has the 4.3 v6, but the parts store told me they were the same! and i've never had trouble from my other truck!

    it was the coil! runs like a champ! the fuel pressure regulator was a big factor too, it was a combination of the both, go figure!

If you have access to a scanner .check the spark control module. see what the computer controlled spark advance reading is compared to base spark timing when you disconnect the timing connector below the glovebox,then see what the scanner reads with the connector connected.the spark module is located next to the tbi which im sure you know.

88 chevy 2.5l, gets fuel will not start


An engine shut not backfire unless the timing is off, it has a burnt valve or an exhaust restriction. Since the crank sensor was the catalyst for the problem, I would again check it. It definately affects the timing for the fuel and spark

Sounds like the Pump Mounted Injection Module.. Starts, dies, Starts dies... Not a fun fix.. but atleast it's just under the intake..

I have a 93 altima that will crank but will not start...about a couple months ago i went to my work and shut off my car. it was running fine when i shut it off.. when i came back out and started my car...


this year model is notorious for fuel related probs...check the remainder of the fuel system, injectors, and the fuel pressure regulator also verify that the fuel pump is actually running and getting the correct amount of power to the pump itself..... it may not be bad just not getting enough power

1993 altima will crank but will not start..


replace the distributor oil is leaking into the electronics of the distributor and shorting out pull cap back off and look and see if oil is leaking out
