SOURCE: truck only goes in reverse

You are going to need to either replace the tranny or rebuild it from the sound of it. The one possiblity is that you are low on fluid. If that is the case it could be causeing your problems

SOURCE: I have a '97 Saturn SL2 and just had the tranny

I would take the car back. You paid too much to still have problems like this. If they offered you a valve body replacement and you turned down the offer. They should still repair or replace with out too much hassle. If you have to, and you can, park the car out front with a sign saying not a good repair and they will work with you quickly.

SOURCE: 04 cayenne transmission rebuilt but car does not move on drive or reverse

Does it have enough oil in the gearbox ,these newer motors have a special filling procedure from the bottom ,their is no dipstick and a level tube in the bottom of the box whereby its filled then the usual dealer software to programme the box and then its refilled again if needed ,if the transmission fluid is low it shut the box down via the computer ,come across before on later VWs with auto box and i filled one through the breather till the level appeared correct for the amout of fluid ,although i couldnt tell as this plug lets the oil out and you need a special tool for this which isnt sold only to dealers ,i made mine from a big piece of cork but ? Still wouldnt work as the computer went into protection mode .So i gave up and it went into dealer for a bill and a half usual story this and that was wrong and a new gearbox needed as no spare parts sold seperatly and all i done was to drain the oil to change it what a rip off

Is there an issue with reverse in a 46re transmission?

Check the shift linkage. It is either loose or binding and not engaging reverse. It could also be the reverse clutch pack you just rebuilt or replaced.

I bought a 92 Chev 2500 4X4 from a guy just recently. He said the tranny wont go into gear. I found the transfer case was in neutral. So i put it in gear and away it goes. But reverse seamed sluggish. ...

If your transmission is a 700r4 (4l60) you have a reverse band that engages when you want to go in reverse. since it drives forward your low reverse clutch and your fwd clutch are working. This leaves the band which was probably slipping now is not engaging.

Okay, So i got a 97 grand am GT 2.4L 5 speed and the tranny is acting up. It goes into reverse and first fine but then it wont get it to go into second. You can force it in but it will pop out and grind....

I suspect you have a bent shifting fork, located inside the transmission. Some trannys are easier than others to change out the shifting forks while others are a nightmare , but it is a major job with a lot of steps required to do .As transmissions can be very difficult and are complex I would recommend checking on the price of a used or rebuilt one - or getting an estimate from a tranny shop to fix yours. You can greatly lower the cost by pulling and re - installing the tranny yourself. Make sure the shop you choose has a warranty - it's easy to do this job wrong and mess up the tranny!!!

2002 ford escort zx2 tranny slipping from Andrew

Yes. Having owned a trans repair shop, I will tell you, never change fluid on a slipping trans or one that the fluid is very dark and stinks. Why? It will slip even more, to the point that you can't use it.

The Trans is burnt inside and has to be rebuilt or replaced with a remanufactured one. $1600.00 or more

I will be kind here, which is hard for me being a car guy.
Why did you buy a vehicle at an auction?

You buy cheap, you got nothing. I would expect those kind of problems, when deciding on a purchase such as you made and leave room in the puchase price to cover spending at least two weeks going thru the entire vehicle before putting it on the road.

97 SATURN SC1, WONT GO INTO REVERSE AND GOES VERY SLOW

Transmission is not junk. You need to replace the valve body with a rebuilt one. The cause of reverse not working is because the booster valve cannot create sufficient pressure to get into reverse (reverse requires the most pressure). The booster valve is worn down and the valve body needs to be replaced, rebuilt is the way to go. This is from not changing the fluid and filter every 20,000 -- 30,000 miles to keep gunk from building up and wearing down the valve.

The transmission is fine, don't let anyone talk you into putting another one in, especially for thousands of dollars, NOT THE PROBLEM.

Hello. As you know, the transmission is one of the more sophisticated components in any auto. It takes the most transmission pressure to engage reverse, third, and fourth gear in an auto tranny. In an auto tranny, the shifter is connected to a linkage that manually shifts between the different gears in the transmission. When you shift into reverse, all transmission pressure is concentrated to engage reverse. When you shift to drive the transmission will operate normally, building pressure until it can shift into the next gear. With third, second, or first gear selected it will lock out all higher gears (Unless the TCU detects overrevving of the engine, in which case it will override gear selection and upshift to avoid engine damage). All the TCU does in a modern auto tranny is control shift points. Years and years ago, shifting was controlled by a spring attached to the gas pedal. When the gas pedal was depressed, the spring would expand. As tranny pressure grew, the spring would become compressed until it was fully compressed, engaging the next gear. The harder you stepped on the gas, the longer you went until the tranny shifted. In modern transmissions the TCU dictates shift points, and not much else. The TCU will also control when the torque converter will lock, but that's where it's duties end. The problem with engaging reverse is either a linkage issue, or a problem with the pump not building enough pressure to fully engage reverse.

Try putting the shifter in reverse, holding the brakes firmly, and giving the car gas. If the car reaches a higher RPM and suddenly slams into reverse it is the pump. The pump will only build enough pressure to engage reverse with higher RPM's. If the pump is severly damaged it won't engage at all, but if this is the case it probably won't engage third or fourth gear either at that point. If the problem is with the linkage, reverse just won't engage whatsoever, despite RPM's. I'd say start with the shift linkage. If it's bent or misadjusted it could cause reverse to not be fully engaged. The TCU doesn't control reverse at all, since there are no shift points and no need for the torque converter to lock.

When put into reverse, it wtarts to move back

You need to take it top a tranny shop before something breaks. You may have a torq converter issue that only a shop can repair. Or you may have a bad solenoid in the trans. Also if the engine is idling high in park you may have a vacuum in the engine area.

Drove my 97 chevy truck to school tried to park in reverse and heard a sound like i hit something drove foward then reverse and it did not go in reverseonly foward but it takes awhile to shift

Your sun gear shell (google it) has broken in your transmission. I'm guessing you only have 1st and 3rd forward gears? I have a 98 Z-71 and have been through 3 of them. The OEM shell is junk. When you take it to the tranmission shop, tell them to replace it with a hardened shell. My local transmission shop charged about $450 (parts and labor) to change the shell only. The very first time it broke (about 65,000 miles) they went ahead and rebuilt the tranny while they had it apart. If you've never had your tranny rebuilt, I reccomend doing it while they have it apart - they probably will, too. I have the advantage of knowing my mechanic since I was born (small town). He is as honest as they come and this was his suggestion.
Since he put the hardened shell in mine, I have had no problems.

Good luck!

Sounds like the trany shop didn't rebuild the transmission like they were. Take the truck back to the shop and have them rebuild it at their cost, if they did it not to long ago.
